"Star Wars: game wait for a pair of updates". Some people may be playing fine, but others are affected by bugs. And there are several: from hardcoded dead zones in joysticks, to campaign levels where progress is blocked because an AI mate won't move, to Star Destroyers not firing when they should, to a framerate related bug that makes the game feel slower and less smooth than the fps indicator shows, etc.

My only issue so far with Star Wars is that I am getting a severe refresh rate bug while playing on my Quest. Every mission or so there is a bug that makes it so that when I look around the game sort of chugs and lags. When looking straight ahead and doing typical flying stuff it's buttery smooth. It's fixed when I leave to the main menu and return but it is definitely a bit of a bummer when it occurs.

When it works it is probably one of the best VR experiences I have had and just feels insanely cool.

Nah, touch controllers are really, really good. It's a significant reason why I am giving the Q2 first crack at winning me over, especially as it sounds like the controls are going to be more like the CV1s, which I still maintain are the best iteration of VR controls.

As someone who never tried a CV1, what do people like about the controllers over the Rift S/Quest controller? The current controller feels great to me and I can't see what would make it better from pictures.

The center of gravity for the CV1 controllers are smack dab in the middle of your palms, so no matter how you move your hands, they're not trying to jostle or rotate out of your grip. S/Quest controllers are top heavy, so they try to roll a bit. That top ring is also relatively fragile and doesn't protect your hand, with CV1 you can full on bash poo poo and it'll both be fine and protect your hand.

There are a few more small things but those are the big ones for me

CV1 controller is better than Rift S, I have both and the CV1 feels more solid, better built and nicer in the hand imo of course.

I understand it was a concession to make tracking inside-out but I liked having the ring down rather than up over hand level: the biggest time this becomes an annoyance is racking pistol slides in VR shooters.

Go measure your inter-pupilary distance first before locking one in. The G2's is relatively narrow, and if your IPD is higher than 68mm get an Index instead.

I might be getting the same kinda issue, its real weird and inconsistent performance. Sometimes its real smooth even on high settings, other times its badly stuttering even if I put everything at low.

And what's especially odd is my windows desktop is updating at like 10fps while Squadrons is open. I've never seen a game do that before. But the frame timing in SteamVR says its doing fine, so why is Windows struggling so much??

I get it 1-2 times a mission. You gotta quit back to the main menu and start from the last checkpoint to fix it.

The problem seems to be related to the camera viewport. Like, the game will be running at full frame rate, but the camera itself only updates like 2-3 times per second. So when you rotate your head, your picture will get heavily timewarped before the camera update happens and it snaps to your head position. It is suuuuuuper janky and it needs to have been fixed yesterday.

For those of you with NMS performance issues in VR, I may have stumbled on a fix.

Mine ran pretty poorly after this update, with lots of stuttering and reprojection. I assumed it was SteamVR cranking the SS up to 150% again, but when I dug in it wasn’t that.

Turns out that by default NMS VR is hugely single-core, so once it maxes out that core, it’s done, performance-wise. Thankfully you can change that in a config file

In the NMS folder in your Steam games directory, find
/binaries/settings/TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS.VR.MXML

in that file will be two values, “NumHighThreads” and “NumLowThreads”

The key seems to be to set it to use all threads minus one for the OS/SteamVR/Whatever.

So if you, like me, have a 12 logical core processor, you’d want to reserve one for SteamVR, giving you 11 cores left. You then set NumLowThreads to 1, leaving you 10 cores, so you then set NumHighThreads to 10

A 16 core would get low cores of 1 and high cores of 14 and so on.

This took the game from a hitchy stuttery mess to 90fps nearly all the time for me. Well worth it if you want to explore some planets

I think YMMV on this one, i have a 6-core CPU, when i opened up that file mine was set to 3 high, 6 low. Set to 4 high, 1 low and it made no difference to the stuttering at all (NMS used to run perfectly fine prior to this latest update)

Same. I was really worried my 1060 couldnt handle the VR but its totally playable at a mix of medium/low and sampling up to 130%. Occasional jitters and some ghosting but its fine and such a blast.

Is there actually VR video out there that isn't horrendous? Everything I have seen has been either absolute trash, or some 360 video that was interesting in theory but looks lovely as hell. And the scale is always mind bendingly weird. It always feels like it's from a fly's perspective where I am 1 inch tall but flying 6 feet in the air. It makes my brain want to explode.

I was loving around with a couple of VR video apps on the Oculus store a few weeks ago to see if VR video was still as bad as I remember it being when I got a PSVR 3 years ago and this was the top video on the first one I downloaded. Imagine watching this in an HMD with the perspective cranked to 1000% wrong

Man, Squadrons is a blast in vr, I am amazed how well it works over the Link.

If link loving works at all, I now know that my Alyx issues are tied to my pc being kinda bad but now sometimes my Link just disconnects for no good reason. Probably my lovely cable, because I'm still using the one I should have stripped for copper because now I am afraid to buy another one, as the official one is a) way too expensive for me atm and b) not compatible because I don't have a USB-C connector in my computer. I theoretically have space on the motherboard for some extention, but I have no idea if that would support USB 3 and I can't find a precise answer. Seriously considering a new motherboard and CPU just so I can have this poo poo sorted out.

SCheeseman

You can get USB3 Type C to Type A adapters. Or you could just use any old USB 2.0 cable as long as the quality is alright and it has a Type C connector on one end.

are there any turnkey pro rigs for 360stereo video? I tinkered with mono360 stills about 5 years back when it was still 'shoot with DSLR on nodal pivot head, stitch into 3rd party software overnight' and 360video was still unreachably high-end; thought to look up what the Google suggested for 360 panos these days

https://www.google.com/streetview/contacts-tools/products/

they all look a lot easier than what I was having to put up with :o: but yeah, monoscopic still.

SCheeseman
Apr 23, 2003

Last I checked most of the biggest producers (ie porn) use custom rigs. It's mostly 180 stereo too since it allows for greater quality.

The problem I see with producing 180/360 content is that once volumetric video is more accessible, I feel all the old stuff will have about as much demand as silent movies had after the introduction of talkies. It's a pretty massive leap forward in immersion, quality, comfort etc

Yeah, with all this weirdness, i found it WAY smoother and a better experience to just set it to ASW 45fps locked, so its always reprojecting, because at least its doing a good job, compared to it running and 90 and looking choppy due to this.
