Some nerve on the guy to claim he didn't say anything homophobic when the referee admitted the heard the slur, but didn't know it was a slur. And when numerous others heard it, AND there's recording of him saying it (E: apparently, some papers were saying recordings confirmed it). Flemmings: “...batty boy...” Martin: “Did you call me batty boy/gay/etc?” Ref then hears that 2nd part and sends off Martin.

About 98% of English football fans would agree with him (and probably near the same proportion of most sports fans in most countries). It's just ridiculous how prevalent it still is, and seeing - to take a close-to-home example - the exact same West Ham fan groups who loudly applauded bans for monkey chants and other racist abuse justifying the infamous "rent boys" chants at Chelsea as "just a bit of banter" makes my loving blood boil.
