Zoig posted:

Well, let me put it this way, its about a full length rpg worth for the whole of the very base stuff that just got trimmed down, they just took out about another 5-10 hours of trash stuff that is boring and adds nothing to the world. It would take about a week or 2 of casual play to get to the final boss for the A Realm Reborn, but before that you do get at least 2 cool fights. Its pretty much all buildup but stuff that actually matters does start happening right after the starting city quests.

You mostly have to ask yourself if you are willing to invest a lot of time into a plot that absolutely does have payoffs. In straight level ranges, at level 20, 35, and 47, real cool poo poo happens. The big gap between 35 and 47 is a lot of setup for the first expansion, and that's most of what really comes to mind right away.

Thirding this as the most correct explanation, particularly regarding the levels.

Bearing in mind that the current level cap is 80, the base game goes to 50, and the trial ends at 60:

This means that yeah, up to either level 35 or 47 you may be very bored if you're used to more exciting games. Even with a lot of trash ripped out I don't blame anyone for saying "I don't have the time to waste on this".

Once you hit the end of the ARR base game you both start unlocking a bunch of dungeons, which means you get to play around with most of a proper class kit. You then also still have the entirety of the Heavensward expansion for free, as well as all its post-patch content up to right when the Stormblood expansion starts.

I would say this means you have to get through 20-30 hours of "meh" with occasional highlights, before you to get to another 30ish hours of "this is pretty good" within the free trial - more if you do the side raids and dungeons, which you should as they have actual story and lore to them which often ties into the main plot.

As noted upthread, it's not a 'rush to cap' MMO, it's a single-player game with open environments like FF12 or FF15 where sometimes you queue up with other players for dungeons and big fights. When I hit Stormblood content the open world often felt goddamn deserted since once you get through its story there's not a lot to do there unless you have specific plans for certain side content.

I do really appreciate that the first level of each faction is literally ‘tutorial but also an excuse to allow you to fly around this sick armada and appreciate the scale’ then they just drown you in trash mobs.

Resident Evil 3: Pacing issues.

You play Jill for the first 40%, then Carlos for the next 40% outside of another boss fight for Jill, then Jill for the last 20%. It feels off that the main character is out of commission for so long. Sort of like how Nero is largely absent from the latter halves of both DMC games he's in. I never played the original and don't give a poo poo about some cut clock-tower level and slug boss, but they could have put more Jill content in the middle.

Carlos gets an inventory upgrade that only he can use, during a short intense hold-the-line setpiece after which he is no longer playable.

While I agree with your complaint that RE3 Remake is a little too faithful to the original pacing-wise, the clock tower is the Jill content that got cut from the middle.

edit: For reference, in the original you only played as Carlos once, from the time when Jill is knocked out to when he gets the vaccine to her. It was probably meant more as a little bonus thing where the player got a chance to go wild with an assault rifle for a bit. The remake gives Jill's visit to the RPD near the start of the game to him instead.

another thing that messes with the pacing is how the opening section with the lead up to meeting nemesis, where youre searching the streets and you meet brad, is completely missing

i think if they wouldve had that instead of the BLAM HERES NEMESIS opening it mightve turned out better, at least pacing-wise

She's still goin'. Of late she's been running around with an anti-terrorist and/or anti-zombie-outbreak group that for some reason keeps having the chain of command break down due to inevitable betrayals from its higher up members. This occurs in like every RE game this group features in, and it's just kind of generally accepted as a thing that happens. She got mind controlled by Wesker for a while and became a dual SMG wielding ninja in a catsuit, but she got better. I think that was the last game she was in timeline-wise (RE5) but there was also Revelations in which she and said anti-terrorist group hang out on enormous cruise ships fighting zombie leeches because that's something that's never gone wrong in a Resident Evil game before.

I'm hoping she'll show up to save Ethan and Chris near the end of Village tbh in the same way Chris showed up in 7 since she's the other original character. Hopefully Ethan is a bit more fun in Village at least if not.

It's weird they keep giving Chris such prominence AND making him so dull. They always give Leon good fun lines and have him seem like he's enjoying himself and Claire and Jill got the same in their original games and especially the remakes. Chris just feels like default protagonist man to me which works in a group but not so much when he's solo.

With the exception of the core four protagonists: Jill/Chris/Claire/Leon, and Ada and Wesker as the recurring villains, almost nobody makes it past their first game even if they survive. Barry made it to Revelations 2, and Sherry showed up in RE6, but beyond that anyone new is basically a guest star. We'll see about Ethan in RE8.

I'm not even that good at Hades and I still feel like the game is expecting me to die 10 times as often as I actually do. I died on what I would assume at this point in the game is the last boss and still had people in the home base talking about me getting to the second area for a death or three.

My problem with Hades is that the difficulty curve is all messed up. The second area versus the first is a gradual increase in difficulty but third to second is way harder.

The most virtuous child in the entire world.
Hades really needs a way to mercy kill a run without restarting on the same seed. If you choose the "give up" option from the menu, it just reverts you to the last save, which preserves the RNG seed. You can tell when you've made a mistake with a weapon reforge, often pretty quickly. And it sucks that there's no way to go "alright let me just do a fresh run and try again."

Often the best choice is intentionally dying by taking hits or standing in lava, and that doesn't feel good to do at all. Plus it takes ages thanks to traits you can buy that let you cheat death a number of times.

Also this. The boss of the third area has wayyyy too much health compared to the second. And the final boss has even more than them. The player power curve is a bit skewed too, and it's really easy to get into a situation where you know you can't win, but you have no choice but to let it play out across the next 45 minutes because of the aforementioned inability to quick start a new run.

Zoig
Oct 31, 2010

Things probably scale that high because you get your second hammer in Elysium and usually can make some pretty absurd combos with 2 hammers, plus by boss 3 the core of your build should be done. On good runs they melt just as fast as the last 2, and the real problem is if you dont get a good setup for doing a lot of damage then it becomes a slog.

Lunchmeat Larry

I guess there's so much stuff like darkness, gems, nectar etc that even a doomed run is going to get you significant permanent progress, but yeah it's weird that the mercy kill option just isn't there

FFXIV: I've failed three times on an escort mission because the oval office I'm supposed to protecting keeps dying. He's especially a oval office because he attacked you earlier on. It doesn't matter if you set it to easy-mode the gamepad targeting-system gets confused when there are so many enemies fighting on screen. Why the gently caress would you bottle-neck the main quest of an MMO with an escort mission?

Crash 4: It's About Time is a lot of fun but I'm getting a bit tired of the devs hiding crates in spots you have no reason to check while offering no hint of their presence.

How many crates are present in this screenshot minus the metal one and the outlined ones? If you said 'four', you're wrong. There are thirteen. They're hidden against the stairs, just out of sight of the camera so that you cannot angle it to get them in frame and have to blindly spin to find them. There's also one just above Crash's head which is hinted at by a line of wumpa fruit here, but that's not the case on so so many other occasions.

I feel like when they made the "main" gems wumpa fruit collection, they started hiding the boxes more to compensate. Or vice versa. In either case, the crates are definitely more trial and error / experimentation based than in the original trilogy.

We've had some speculation in the RE thread that somewhat convinces me RE7 had some kind of mechanics along those lines but then mostly dropped them. Like, not all the way to permanent changes, but maybe impacting your gameplay until you're able to fix it rather than the couple of times it happens and is instantly resolved in cutscenes.

Neverdead. I played it, fun concept but sadly it was absolutely unfun bullshit to play. like your head would pop off and you'd have to roll around to get back to your body (which was dogshit to control) and you'd finally manage it... only to be hit by an enemy which would re-decapitate you in one hit then spit your head across the other side of a large room.
