Extremely :same: - can recommend quite a bit of nukey nukey reading:

Hennessy's Secret state as goddamntwisto mentioned as well as his 'The Human Button' radio 4 documentary
Churchill's Bomb by Graham Farmelo
War Plan UK by Duncan Campbell if you can find a paperback copy or order one from a local bookshop

for a more US flavour
Command and Control by Eric Schlosser is a recommendation I had from this thread in a previous incarnation and can pass that on
Atomic by Jim Baggott

E: if you're after Cold War stuff One Minute to Midnight by Michael Dobbs is a good primer on the Cuban Missile Crisis

For China, I've wanted to get my hands on a copy of Paper Tigers by Jeffrey Lewis if anyone has and can recommend - have read (inhaled in one and a half sittings) his Clancy-esque 2020 commission report on the North Korean nuclear attacks on the United States and he's pretty good on Twitter around the North Korea situation

I recently watched the Command and Control documentary that I think was recommended ITT at some point. It was interesting, maybe a bit long for the level of detail it has. But it's worth watching at least the start of for the interviews with the incredibly dead-eyed missile crew chief who calmly explains how he was perfectly prepared to kill tens of millions of people back than, and he'd be prepared to do it all over again today.

Also the other characters in the fuelling team who were basically just excited to be playing with explosives, and the Titan II was the biggest explosive there was.

La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo

What do people think of the Covid-19 app? I installed it the other week but as I only have to go to an office once a week I don't have it on most of the time.

Some people I know have been saying they have received notifications they've been near someone with Covid but have ignored it as they couldn't see anyone else around at the time.
There's also the question of security, as apparently it's not very secure
And after the recent Excel gently caress-up I'm not too sure it even does what its meant to
And unless I log in somewhere else it keeps me logged in where I've been, so does that mean it still thinks I'm there or does it just go off Bluetooth? And if the latter, why log-in anywhere anyway?

I uninstalled it this morning, for now, but think I'd rather avoid pubs and cafes and places you have to sign in than have it on my phone.

Am I one of the people who don't wear masks and think all this is a deepstate plandemic, or by not using the app am I actually an intellectual?

lmao we now have almost as many covid patients in our hospital as we did at the peak, difference is the hospital was much emptier last time due to no surgeries and people staying at home and not coming to A+E. We ran out of beds last week and are going to have to turn a fourth general medicine ward to covid today. With numbers of new cases in North West not dropping its only going to get worse too.

The notification doesn't mean you're standing next to someone with covid right now. It means your phone has been within x distance of someone who later had a positive test for y minutes. You should listen to the notifications.

Says who? And in what way? The apple/Google apis it uses are very clever and I haven't seen any suggestions of security issues by anyone who understands the algorithms.

I don't know this for a fact. But I'd assume if you've checked in anywhere and haven't checked out it'll err on the side of caution and warn you if someone tests positive who was in there after you.

The Bluetooth based checking is a separate system. And it doesn't know your location. So there'd be no way really for the Bluetooth system to opt you out of the sign in system.

I haven't installed it and probably wont. I don't go to pubs or restaurants or sports or gigs or really do anything. I shop but assume that i'm in and out too fast for it to bluetooth pair me with any lurgy havers. I work for myself and am miles behind and its costing money and can't afford for a further enforced break of two weeks solely because an app made by people that have proven themselves totally useless time and again says so. If I get ill of course I will.

Oh.

I think this is a problem for any sort of extra restrictions now

in march the trade off was "stay inside for a few months and we'll use the time to get everything sorted out and go back to something approaching normal"

what's the trade off supposed to be now? "stay inside for another few months and we'll continue to do nothing useful with your sacrifices, then we can do this all a third time in another six months"?

also they'll blame you for the virus whether you follow their instructions or not

Going on for 5 days without test results now. The cough I had last week has cleared up but there is apparently no way to chase them. Guess I just wait until the app says I can go outside again in three days?

I meant in terms of the notifications that if people are ignoring them, this doesn't bode well for how successful the app is intended to work. I think people should pay attention to the notifications but from what I've heard it's more based on how convenient it is at the time for people receiving them. And my IT pals suggesting it has flaws in and shouldn't be used by those in jobs in the security sector. But again, I'm not sure if this is just wishful thinking or of any substance.

As far as I could see there wasn't a way of checking out besides going elsewhere and checking in? Though I didn't look around the app too much, maybe that'd be an option. But you're saying they have two separate systems in the app anyway in order to ensure people are contacted if there was a chance?

I wish I paid as much attention to how phones work as I understand other technology, sheesh.
