Dunno how accurate this thread is, but his last point links to some particularly interesting developments. https://twitter.com/lnachman32/status/1313347906225631233 https://twitter.com/WilliamYang120/status/1313316370382114816 https://twitter.com/WilliamYang120/status/1313318033058750464 So if the KMT stops being the turncoat reunification party, or at least puts up a pretense that it isn't one, then what will happen? I remember when America held beef over Taiwan's head in like 2013. This is the thread where half the posters think Taiwan is an illegitimate American colony on Chinese soil, and therefore it's people should be subjugated etc but idk how you reconcile basic stuff like this edit: obviously both parties wanting to restore relations with US in a step in that direction, but that means we're not there yet Antonymous has issued a correction as of 09:20 on Oct 6, 2020 |

How the gently caress do they expect a restoration of official relations? It's not like america's gonna jeopardize their mainland relationship for something as paltry as embassies in taiwan

The US is not going to war for Taiwan physically in the Taiwan island. Because at this distance China has huge home field advantage. The US current best plan is sweet talk Taiwan into declaring independence, trigger the military invasion and use that as an excuse to put all Chinese companies on sanction and dollar ban, a la pulling an Iran, and use that as a leverage to make massive profit in the financial market. In order to execute that, US need to have at least Europe some what on their side. I think the US know they can't count on ASEAN countries at this point given the huge trade volume between China and ASEAN.

Taiwan is not going to declare independence, because it cannot hope to win a war, the most that DPP-led administrations will do is what it's always done, which is flirt with symbolic signs of independence like getting renamed Taiwan instead of ROC on non-political systems (like on airline websites or at international sporting competitions). China is not going to declare war, because it cannot hope to win an invasion, the most that aggressive presidencies will do is what they've always done, which is push back on reaffirming Taiwan's international non-recognition, and also to lock its economy up with the mainland's as much as possible.

Taiwan can and should declare independence, but it doesn't because of trade, not war. China can't declare war on Taiwan.

the DPRK has overthrown multiple governments in the past 30 years so they don't have much room to talk. Also the extensive sanctions regime they have that cut off countries from international finance markets is more brutal than people realize.
