Plus their initials are literally inverted.

This is the first of the new shows where none of the main cast piss me off. They finally got 'starry eyed naive newbie' right with Tendi, after doing that character archetype in the other two shows.

Given the confusion maybe they'll redo the bleep for the future to make it clearer what she's not saying.

I must be an enlightened Trekkie as I never assumed it was anything but "gently caress" when I heard that line.

Also, some people involved with LDS are responsible for the infamous clip from Rick and Morty decrying that Rick is not allowed to use the word retarded in civilized conversation. It's not much of a stretch to picture a writer using the slur, and defending it.

My (male) husband and I did simultaneous "Did she just....." when we initially heard it. While it's not my job to tell you the sexuality of the regular posters here, I'm not the only queer trek poster and I'm not the only one who did this double take. Our own perspectives and lived experiences make some of us reach different conclusions on what we heard at first - the uncensored clip demonstrates a weird line read; sounds more like fox than fucks so the slight ambiguity here created the opening for incorrect interpretation.

CharlestheHammer likely hasn't had to endure the high school experience of getting called that word almost every single day as a teenager. If they get to make broad baseless assumptions about the sanity of LGBTQI posters here, then I get to assume they are a 30-40 year old white straight cis-male american, and I will not have one of those tell me what is and is not sane.

I still don't understand why the beep anyway, they don't take this censored approach with DIS or PIC. If CBS think that this show is going to open up the teen market for star trek, instead of the usual trekkie cohort, then they're the ones who need their sanity questioned.

Really (canonically) those should be the uniforms but the basically TNG uniforms look better with the art direction of the series. Everything is bright and pops and those are too drab.

I actually like the Lower Decks uniforms far more than the Picard flashback ones except for the extremely dumb color-coordinated boots and soles. They almost work for an animated show but they’d look like cheap sneakers in live action.

I can't wait until Seasons 3 or 4 when the crew starts complaining about having to put on new uniforms. And Freeman says she's delayed it for as long as she can.

Maybe they can clarify and canonize the whole uniform situation.

Really? Huh. Then maybe this is just a case of “maybe kids are watching” and it’s easier to make one audio track upload an alt-audio track.

Canada also has considerably looser content guidelines for broadcast networks, so we can have hard unbleeped swearing on our prime time blocks, but Canadian-produced shows usually shy away from it specifically to help their prospects of being aired on US television. CityTV, one of our ABC-NBC-CBS equivalent main broadcaster channels up here once used to show literal soft core porn with unblurred genitals at 1 AM on Friday nights under its official banner, that's how lax things are up here.

The example I like to cite is ReBoot, which was crushed to paste under the weight of ABC's adherence to US Broadcast Standards & Practices in its first two seasons, and then when it was dropped by ABC at the end of Season 2, it ripped the shackles off and veered heavily into darker, more mature storytelling (for a kids show) because YTV let them get away with straight up murder, they didn't give a poo poo, it was basically a flagship show up here.

To be honest I'm not actually a hundred percent sure that Lower Decks really needs to be rated what it is and go for adult, I don't think the show would miss much at all without the bleeped swearing instances and the heavier gore. If they just toned the worst of the visuals down slightly it'd be exactly the same and PG and wouldn't lose anything, I reckon.

I’d never have expected it too, but given the Rick and Morty pedigree, I wonder how many people would have believed it as an edgy ‘we might have said it but you’ll never prove it cause of the bleep’.

To be honest it’s something I’m kinda surprised wasn’t picked up during a screening and carefully adjusted before broadcast.

Yeeeeeah, I heard it that way too and it’s because they end the bleep on the S instead of the K.

I’m also not crazy about them continuing to use a gendered slur like bitch, but that’s hardly a problem exclusive to Lower Decks.

This thread actually made me think about that earlier today

Like, in another decade or two are we going to be cringing at that word on old media with similar intensity? Especially applied to men?

I'll admit it's probably less bad on the slur-o-meter, but it's definitely not good
