^^ god I'd love having a ceiling without popcorn texture, but holy mother of god is it expensive, and you have to have someone who REALLY knows what they are doing. I was quoted something like 8k minimum for my 982 square feet. also just trying to imagine cleaning all that tile oh god

The 8x10 area rug came in and I like it but I think I might have gone too small . When I measured the space, I didn't think I could go wider because because the far corner juts up against a threshold between hardwood/tile and the near corner is already at the edge of the "living room". But now that I look at it, I probably could've gone 9x12 and just dealt with a threshold bump. The 8x10 was $210 and the 9x12 is $290, and it'll cost me $50 for return shipping. I'm not sure it's worth $130 just to have an additional foot of width. There's also a 10x14 option for $360 but that's definitely too big. The search for a new coffee table continues slowly and yes, I'm planning to replace the drapes with something in light blue. Josh Lyman fucked around with this message at 20:34 on Oct 8, 2020 |

It just takes time and a very sore neck/back/shoulders. I did my entire house, about 1600 sq ft of ceiling.

I'd be interested in seeing pics of yours, because what I was told by vendors is that if you don't do it exactly right it's easily noticeable where you hosed up (since you no longer have the texture to cover up all the imperfections). actionjackson fucked around with this message at 21:26 on Oct 8, 2020 |

$8,000 seems incredibly high - you may want to get a different quote. The average cost I've seen is around $1-$2 per square foot. Another factor to consider when removing popcorn is the age of your house. If it was built before the 1980s you should test the ceiling for asbestos. If asbestos isn't a factor then you can DIY it, but speaking from experience it is a tedious, messy, and unpleasant project that will cause a lot of neck pain. I removed the popcorn from my half bath (< 30 sq. feet). As someone with no real experience, it took 3 skim coats with sanding in between over a couple weeks to have it look professional. It took 2 days and around $300 to have the popcorn removed and the ceiling painted in my master bathroom.

The average cost I've seen is around $1-$2 per square foot. yeah there's all the other stuff too as you mentioned i didn't get an official estimate, I just remember some number like that coming up. In either case it would be several thousand dollars at an absolute minimum and I just can't justify that. they also said that making the ceiling smooth was more expensive than other options people do, like putting some less offensive texture in it's place like knockdown was the estimate you saw JUST for the removal? because as you said there's a lot of other stuff you need to do as well.

You live in an area where nearly everyone who works with sheetrock is so loving bad at it that they wouldn't be able to get a job on the east coast. This whole "do a lovely job and cover it up with popcorn/knockdown" is very regional.

In order not to dump a TON of photos to this thread, here's an album I put together a few years ago showing some photos from when I bought the house and the completion of my first portion of the renovation. Anyway, it is not rocket science, but it also is labor intensive and messy. Lay down tarps and cover up anything you don't want to be filthy. Spritz the ceiling with water using a garden sprayer. Scrape off popcorn. Fix any damaged tape, nail pop, cracks, etc. Mix all purpose joint compound with some water and roll it onto the ceiling with a 9" paint roller. Skim off with your taping knife of choice. Knock down ridges, very lightly sand. Do one to two more skim coats and sand. Seal the bare joint compound with Zinsser Gardz, and finally paint. My brother and I did all the labor on my house. It was backbreaking and felt like it would never end, but we were both working full time jobs, and spending an additional 20-ish hours per week at the house after work. Would I take on doing all that labor on by myself on the next house I own? Probably not, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to pay $8,000 for the amount of area you have to do. https://imgur.com/a/c2Jde During Same room, skim coated and can lights I later redid the kitchen with an Ikea kitchen: https://imgur.com/a/iwtgH4O In Conclusion, I would probably not try to take on all this drywall work if I were living in the house and doing it myself. Were I you, I would try to get several quotes from drywall people. I suspect you were quoted an obscenely high price because the person didn't want to do it.

speaking of that house in Philadelphia, the wikipedia page on that street (Delancey place) is pretty detailed, basically how it developed from pre-civil war onward. I just noticed the Platner chair in the third pic of the 1989 house. that thing weirds me out the raw wood stumps or whatever they are called in the Japanese house seem like they could hurt someone
