Weltlich posted:They get called Red/Blue Heelers here, too. Australian Cattle Dog is the formal name for the breed with the Kennel Clubs, but most farmers that I know just call them "heelers." More than once I have told people that mine is a cattle dog only to have them respond "oh, well she looks just like a blue heeler" then I have to explain the whole thing. Sit pretty isn't always pretty Just a feral little piglet New object exploration at puppy class. Wheelchairs were not a problem. She loves the beach so much. Also she has person eyes.

My childhood dog was three quarters border collie and one quarter blue heeler. She mostly just looked like a shorter furred collie with spotty legs, but man, she had those exact same giant ears.

I hate that based on looks alone Australian Cattle Dogs are pretty much my absolute favorites in the world, but I know that I'd be an absolute terrible person to own one. Not enough space, I'm too lazy, etc etc. At least I realize it though I guess. Gonna just live vicariously though a buncha pics.

That's me and big fluff dogs like samoyeds or newfoundlands. They're such sweeties and I want one so I can hug them whenever I want but I do NOT want to be cleaning up that much drool and huge poops and doing that much brushing constantly.

ACD chat: our girl was advertised as a blue heeler mix. Which was almost certainly a stretch made by the shelter to avoid putting "pit bull mix," since, you know. Anyway here's a story in 3 acts of her and our new cat. (She's definitely something besides bully breed but drat if we know what.)

Scout is such a sweet girl What kind of puppy classes do you have her in? That exploration class seems really smart. Reggie had a "thing" about bicycles for a while, and some sort of "no this is cool" class would have reallyhelped. Reggie also approves of beaches. (His adopted brother Chico thinks the sand is fine, but the water can gently caress right off.) Reggie attempts to teach a younger cousin the right way to sleep. Weltlich posted:Scout is such a sweet girl We’re doing a puppy series that my older dog’s veterinary behaviorist puts on. It’s a haul from my home out in the boonies but it was the only place that does puppy classes past 16 weeks in the area. I got Scout at 4.5 months and she definitely wouldn’t have thrived in an adult dog class. This series is open to puppies up to 8 months. Each week we learn a new skill or two, discuss a common problem and have themed puppy exploration. That week it was moving objects and sounds, the week after was interactive objects (Scout did a slide and a small agility jump), last week was costumes and props, and next week will be veterinary equipment. Here’s Scout and the slide. Last week she tried to steal an umbrella and then barrel rolled some crutches out of the trainer’s hands because she was so excited about potentially getting petted. https://youtu.be/upol6OO-cwI

MikeJF posted:I'm reminded of a story I saw of a herding dog seeing a neighbor's lawn roomba and getting upset for a while that it wouldn't respond to traditional barking and posturing before it eventually realised they could direct it by bumping it on the left or right side of its front which the machine automatically responded to by turning. At which point they apparently decided that they were herding a blind, deaf sheep but could still keep it under control, so they retired to sit and watch and make sure it stayed in its yard, confident they could handle it if it escaped. I have the biggest, happiest grin on my face on reading this.

I was just cooking up some asparagus for the first time in months when I thought "Doesn't Henry like asparagus?" (Henry being a dog) So I went to find him with a little bit and asked him if he wanted some. He went loving bananas when he saw it - full on racing around the house, ricocheting off chairs, only pausing to bang his paws on the ground while howling in insane joy and excitement. Like this, but indoors: Little guy really likes asparagus
