I like the Advance and Rush series, and I wish they'd do more modern 2D games like that. Advance 1 in particular was a pretty good modern take on the classics, and Rush was cool as poo poo.

Generations had a gimmick that absolutely sold me. I might be weak-willed but "Green Hill Zone in 3D" was just as huge of a draw now as it was when it was half-assedly implemented in Sonic Adventure 2.

The opposite applies too - Crisis City Classic is fun as gently caress and has an amazing remix BGM. Ditto Rooftop Run and a couple others.

I wonder if I actually like Rush or just Hideki Naganuma’s soundtrack.

The advance games are more bearable when you realise that anywhere there could be spikes, crushing blocks or bottomless pits, there will be.

The first two have great controls though. I think Yuji Naka worked on at least the first one, which is why the physics are so accurate.

The big thing I remember from Advance 1 is that it uses the original Invincibility music for some reason. I thought SEGA had to pay royalties to use the OG themes, so I dunno why they deemed Advance 1 that important. First Sonic on a Nintendo platform?

I thought Advance 1 was decent enough aside from the terrible Special Stages, it’s the other two where things went off the rails (though 3 at least made an attempt to bring platforming back after the second one was almost entirely focused on speed).

Apart from the mandatory grinding in Rush Adventure, I thought the Rush series was pretty good as well (though Blaze was by far much more fun to play as than Sonic himself). Rush also invented the boost mechanic that would become semi-standard for the series from Unleashed onward.

Advance 1 wasn't bad, but it always felt kind off? It probably just comes down to art style / imitating the 3D Sonics.

Adv2 had some pretty interesting level themes (Music Plant stands out as something pretty fresh for the series) - and on some level I can appreciate what they were going for with the speed-focus and running bosses, the later levels having surprise "trick or die" stuff sucked.

I barely remember Adv3, I think I played it a bit on an emulator and didn't bother to finish. Sunset Hill was kind of a neat spin on a Green Hill revisit.

I really wanted to like Rush 1 but I felt like I ran into a bunch of difficulty walls and never really finished it.

Generations was definitely my favorite game since the 3&K. If I had one complaint, I think it would have been nice to have a few more levels, but it might have been hard to do that "fairly?" (breaking the 1 level per game or 3/3/3 Classic/Middle/Modern split.) The bonus challenges made for some decent extra content.

Advance 1 has pretty much the entirety of Sonic 1's soundtrack included in the sound test.

Good music is a major factor in making a good Sonic game so it's okay to like Rush only because of its soundtrack. This means it's also okay to say Rush Adventure was a bad game because of its poo poo music despite being basically the same game as Rush.

Rush has a more complex, interesting soundtrack, but Rush Adventure has a lot more variety and I listen to it a lot more.

One minor-ish thing I really loved about Mania is how good the remixed tracks for original zones sounded. Sharper and clearer without compromising the originals at all, IMHO:

The original tracks weren't as good overall, but some of them are really catchy and absolutely would not sound out of place as "newly discovered cut tracks from an actual Genesis Sonic game" aside from the sharper instrumentation:

Also not including Egg Reverie's theme which includes part of Fist Bump!!!

EDIT: To make this more of an actual discussion, I actually found the two you posted to be some of the more boring tracks, especially Studiopolis Act 2 not being nearly as good as its Act 1 theme imo. Though I think I still agree with "most of the original tracks weren't as good" since I barely remember Mirage Saloon and Press Garden's themes

I like Studiopolis Act 2 better tbh (they're both great though, easily the best tracks of the new batch)

also the miniboss theme rules but I wasn't 100% sure if it was an original track or a remix of something from Sonic CD (which I haven't yet played all the way through)

I like Titanic Monarch, I think it has a good "final zone" feel to it (even though it's not the true final zone :haw:), but agreed that Mirage Saloon and Press Garden were snoozer tracks across the board. Even the Knuckles-specific version of Mirage Saloon was boring. Ruby Illusion and Egg Reverie are great too though.

Oh, yeah it's 100% original afaik. The only CD remixes in Mania are the Stardust Speedway/Metal Sonic themes I believe

Also I might like the original Flying Battery theme a little better, if only because the bassline is more emphasized in that version, and is almost drowned out in Mania's version, but I like both

i just finished playing through the sonic advances + battle and despite some hiccups and unpleasant callbacks to GG sonic design, they were a good time! my main takeaway is that the GBA sonic artstyle kicks rear end, crossposting from my big sonic dump in gen chat:

So many things about Mania are better than the old games, but don't feel any different. It actually makes it hard for me to go back to S3&K because Sonic Mania plays how I remember S3&K playing when I was a kid, but the reality is rougher around the edges.

:yeah:

Dimps was made up of former SNK staff, right? Might also explain the pretty unfair level design if you're used to designing for arcades.

I'm still waiting for a 2D Mario game with something like Yoshi's Island's artstyle. At least Wario got some games with great sprites and cel animation.

Same, I started and gave up on a billion different TGF fan games. I had this one using Sonic Advance and Battle sprites that was based on the map controls in Sonic Battle but it never got off the ground.

It’s kinda old news at this point, but did anyone here ever post about Treasure Tails? It was a cancelled game (or rather a proposal that never got made) for a Tails-based puzzle game.
