If I remember right, the tactic used by the Polynesians was basically to sail against the current, because that way they could use driftwood and stuff to predict landmasses.

A successful coffee ad in that it made me laugh out loud: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzjUWfhgJwQ "Don't you have anything else? I only drink flat white*. Or a latte macchiato would be fine too." "Shut the gently caress up, this is good!" "Saludo, when good is enough." *) No idea e: I guess not too successful as I'm not going to buy loving Saludo. 3D Megadoodoo has issued a correction as of 09:36 on Oct 13, 2020 |

If Maui'd worked a bit harder, he could have brought Zealandia back to the surface. quote:Zealandia (/ziːˈlændiə/), also known as Te Riu-a-Māui (Māori)[2] or Tasmantis,[3] is an almost entirely submerged mass of continental crust that subsided after breaking away from Gondwanaland 83–79 million years ago Fun fact - all penguins evolved on Zealandia.

3D Megadoodoo posted:A successful coffee ad in that it made me laugh out loud: Flat white is espresso with a smallish amount of steamed milk and little or no foam. Quite a few cafes switched "cappucino" out on their menus and brought "flat white" in a few years ago in the game of "starbucks is copying and coopting what we're doing so we need to change faster than they can keep up or we drown", so it certainly has some trendiness implications to it. I'm not sure wtf a "latte macchiato" would be, since latte = drown the espresso in milk and macchiato = espresso with a bit of foam on top. So unless there's something else lost in translation it's generally cafebabble. To go a bit more critical on it, this ad makes me reflect how independent operators who try new things are besieged by capitalism on both sides, with half of the big corps who pay attention to them just looting their concepts for ideas and mass packaging them, and the other half basically going "you're too pretentious and we sell 'normal'" This also reminds me of how I've had several people argue to me that franchises are local businesses.

The rest stayed on the island.

The general market price of coffee is below what it costs to produce. Coffee, along with chocolate, is some neocolonial crap. This is why I buy artisinal and ridiculously expensive coffee and sometimes chocolate, where I have some reason to believe that the money I pay actually benefits the farmers. This makes me a wanker, I know. Fun fact: most coffee farmers don't drink coffee, because that's expensive, so they actually have no idea how it tastes. Also the chocolate industry has a plan to stop "the worst kind of child labour" (child slaves) by live 2035 or something.

Further fun facts: there are two types of kopi luwak: the one where the critter lives in the trees and eats the fruit and shits out beans. This is good coffee essentially because the critter does a good job cleaning the bean. This is also expensive and I have no doubt involves not paying labourers enough. The other type is the shittiest cheap beans force fed to critters foie gras style. This is sold to tourists at a very high profit I'm sure. The actual reason the good kind is good is the local soil and the fact that good a good washing of the beans in the area is difficult. My general point is that coffee should be a luxury item, not something you drink five litres of every day.
