Its a gigantic stretch to call him anticommunist He had pretty reasonable criticism of the USSR and specific actors within it throughout history Even then one of his most commonly refrained points was that its cheap and useless to be singlemindedly critical of a state you can exercise zero influence over (doubly so for an Official Enemy of the US) and that it is always more intellectually honest and useful to criticize the state you are a part of, especially if you nominally have some Democratic input over its functioning
