I'm waiting to hear what's up but I got news my friend wrecked himself in a MTB accident today. It's a weird coincidence you guys are talking about crashes.

The one this year was very favourable to good distance but some years theres far too much up and down.

I rolled my eyes at the doctor who insisted on x-rays on my smashed thumb but later that evening and the next couple of days when it started hurting more and more, I was glad to have the peace of mind that nothing was broken. With a $3000 deductible - im going to try and tough it out rather than pay for x rays (which i assume are very expensive). I'm sore, but my wrists are the only thing that seems worrisome to me right now, hopefully it is a mild sprain and ill have some discomfort and that will be that.

If my wrist is still hosed tomorrow, ill get it checked out That could be spent on bicycle nonsense (like the $120 I spent on 300 lumen lights for my kids bicycle trailer.

American Healthcare is a flaming hellscape but once you've had an accident, best to get the care you need. You don't want to have wrist pain for the rest of your life because something didn't heal right. Sorry if it's just not affordable regardless. (Vote)

Got it relatively cheap used from a dentist (actually some other kind of doctor if I recall) who bought it for his girlfriend and then had it sit in his basement for years (the plight of many tandems). It's campy 10spd shifters on a 3x9 with an xt rear derailleur. The shifting isn't great but it works better than you'd expect. edit: obligatory tunnel photo bicievino fucked around with this message at 22:39 on Oct 12, 2020 |

As someone with a cheap-ish fixed gear bike, can someone tell me what I’m missing out on by getting a $200 trainer, over a $1400 one? I just want to exercise indoors without dealing with pedestrians.

Its a lot easier to convince yourself that you're not sitting and spinning in your basement and are actually riding bieks with the expensive one. If you're just in it for your 40 mins of cardio 3 times a week get a HRM and a sub to whatever streaming service has stuff you want to watch and park your trainer setup in front of the tv. Edit: for specifics, expensive trainers give you power output and automatically control the resistance mimicking hills and stuff for simulated bike rides like Zwift and have a mode called ERG that demands you pedal at a certain power output, which is awesome if you sign up for something like trainer road. Its a lot more engaging. EvilJoven fucked around with this message at 02:53 on Oct 13, 2020 |

Pie Colony posted:As someone with a cheap-ish fixed gear bike, can someone tell me what I’m missing out on by getting a $200 trainer, over a $1400 one? I just want to exercise indoors without dealing with pedestrians. $200 = completely passive, wheel-on design. $400-500 = smart resistance control, power measurement (usually not that accurate), wheel-on design. $700-900 = smart resistance control, accurate power measurement, wheel-off design $1000+ = smart resistance control, higher power/incline limits, usually quieter, wheel-off design The reality is most people who think they "just want to ride" indoors are in for a rude awakening. It's not fun. Most trainers are used only a handful of times before they get tucked away, never to be seen again. Even when you're just noodling in Z1/Z2 HR, you need active cooling. One medium fan is a bare minimum, I use two medium fans and one 20" Air Master. Your rear end will hurt compared to riding IRL. You pretty much need to wipe down your bike after every ride or the salt accumulation will corrode every fastener, every braze-on, etc. Actually just get rollers since you're on a fixed gear. I'm not really at the level where I need to track my power output or anything (although I wonder how accurate a smartphone step tracking app would be for estimating this), dynamic resistance sounds nice but I think for just burning some calories I could get by with a cheapo trainer. I'll look into rollers, thanks. As far as cooling, I have a fan and could potentially set it up next to a window. The fun thing about living in the city is my living room is not wide enough to fit both my bike and my TV, I'm probably going to have to move the couch or set the bike up at an angle. I'm building up my Cinelli and doing 9050 Di2. The frame was a demo/show bike at one point, so I don't know if it came with the plugs/grommets for Di2 or not, but now I need them. Is there anyone who makes proper sized plugs for internal downtube Di2 cables that would normally have shift cable housing going in? Most of the Shimano grommets I see online are all angled and/or not the right size, or are made for frames that are specifically designed for Di2 (I can't tell). I think I saw some Specialized or Cannondale having the same sort of setup as my bike, but I'd rather not be blindly buying grommets at 10 bucks a set and waiting around. It's not something mission critical really, but it'd be nice to have the cables not bouncing around in the frame.
