We got hold of one from a data hoarding mac user we know. :)

The reason I asked is that my partner is writing about the different ways to make files that take less disk space than what you get when you read them: transparent compression, holes, deduplicating blocks across files, that sort of thing. While we were looking at that, we noticed that the files he has from iTunes have large streches of null bytes. That would be ok on a file system with compression, or even as holes - but HFS+ doesn't support anything that fancy. (APFS does, though).

It's not just "space to type a line of text without rewriting the file", either - one song he looked at had a 600 kB stretch of nullbytes, which seems wasteful. We wondered if this was new (since storage is kind of cheap now), or if it had been like that since back when you paid dearly for ipod storage. The file he got sent was a random 2009 itunes purchase, and that had ... about half a MB of nullbytes just sitting around.

And no, we have absolutely no idea why.

Huh. Very curious. Thanks for sharing-- I'm guessing the OG iTunes 128kbps (with the DRM) files didn't have such things because I remember the file sizes matching pretty closely to the song length.

I may have some original 128kbps files with the DRM stripped off somewhere if that'd be of interest?

I definitely have some. Pepsi did a promotion where certain bottle caps gave you a free song and I still have most of what I downloaded. I was too cheap to outright buy anything from iTunes.

That was the only reason I ever installed iTunes. Install iTunes, redeem code, download song, burn the song, uninstall iTunes.

Thanks for the offer - but apparently he felt done with the issue and banged together an article yesterday. :)
I kind of like the theory he landed on, which is that it's an artifact of how Apple moved album art from being embedded in the files to living separately back around 2006, and the gap is the space where they used to dynamically inject it. (Since the same album can have different art in different regions).

I was thinking it may have had something to do with the album art! 600kb could be the max size for the artwork. will read the article, thank you!
