How often does this happen? I think I've gotten like two angry after match messages. I do get "hey could you report our X, they were being abusive in chat" occasionally from opponents.

I really enjoy aggressively implying that whiny (and bad) players have diarrhea. Recommend the technique to everyone. Don't actually engage, just repeatedly reply with novel ways they pants-shat themselves. Feel free to point out their fifteen deaths once, as well.
That gets you a few rage adds, usually.

My general tactic is to engage their doomer juice and ask them how they plan on surviving global warming and the fact that we won’t be able to produce enough food to feed ourselves. That one really sends people to hell and back.

my pal and i exclusively queue quickmatch as murky+abathur and it makes people so, so very upset.

the funny thing is, we usually win if our the teammates see it through to level 20 with a strong enough early game. but the salt, oh lawd the salt.

I play AI matches almost exclusively, and never look at my stats. I do try hard in my matches, because it's fun to learn and master the character you're playing.

I almost never get anyone bitching about anything, because it's AI matches. Got one the other day that yelled at me in voice chat, reported me, and then spent 2-3 hours sending grumpy whispers because I, alone had made the match last until level 20+ ... They accused me of "padding my stats" (nobody that plays AI matches looks at their own stats, let alone others') and they were just hopping mad that I didn't end the match in 5 minutes.

I can understand wanting your team to play optimally in a "real" match (ranked, QM, ARAM) but I have no idea how people can get mad about AI matches. There is nothing at stake. You are playing practice mode.

They just get so upset about something that doesn't matter at all. I have played ranked DotA and CounterStrike since back in the day, and losing an important match is reason enough to get mad at the internet. Why are these people upset about winning a warmup match???

They don't actually care - they want to be angry, so they rationalize a reason to be angry. That's all.

excuse me i explicitly recall padding my stats in AI, in that i found entertainment in seeing how ludicrously high I could get them.

Butcher with 500 Meat? Don't end please, just let me get more. i don't have enough until AIthas is killed in one swing.

Those stats are not recorded after the match ends. There is nothing in your profile to show that you went on a Meat Lovers Supreme Rampage. That is why I was so confused about "stat padding" guy. That stuff is not recorded, what stats???

I love doing that in AI too, seeing how far I can stack an endless quest before the match ends. Sylvanas' poison dagger lvl 1 talent and Jimmy's lvl 1 pepper talent are both fun to go bonkers with. Just tunnel vision and focus on nothing other than getting more stacks. You are a blind monster mowing down enemy heroes because Number Must Go Up.

The recent Artanis change to his level 1 quest talent is another good one. You get points every time you autoattack a hero. Do nothing but attack heroes, end match with 120k hero damage and 600 stacks of your quest.

NameHurtBrain
Jan 17, 2015
I mean, hero damage numbers and kills do, but I get your point.

I think Orphea can get some ludicrous stacking done too for BIG NUMBER? Arthas D Quest?

Just give everyone some absurd infinite stacking quest Blizz, embrace our stupid giant number seeking future.

Orphea's chomp (W) quest can get insane if you hit dead-in-the-water heroes before they pop. You can easily hit for 1500+ if you pigeonhole yourself into getting those hits.

Arthas D lvl 1 quest (and the rest of the build that buffs D) is one of my favorites. Instead of a CC tank like Mei, he can build into a CC/damage carry if you land your melee hits right. Some ranged heroes like Lunara can shut this down completely but if you can pull it off it's a Big Dick Power Move

That build is great to support a damage dealer that has trouble with the enemy just walking away. Arthas can be incredibly sticky, and it's not on a cooldown. There is no combo. You are slowed until either you or Arthas dies. And he has a lot more HP than you do.

edit: also since building damage has been buffed again, Sindragosa ult is that much better as a pick.

It's trash unless you can stack with people. SL is now full of smurfs and sometimes stacks of them. You'll be in gold playing against a five stack with 1 GM or some poo poo.

Just play QM or ARAM honestly. Maybe ranked if you're a streamer? Idk. I also never felt ranked was worth the effort. Draft takes about as long as half game sometimes and people seemingly try just as little in SL.

this might be unique to my experience, but the gladiator's medallion has had the exact opposite effect that blizzard desired - people have been taking more and more hard cc to ensure that when their team catches someone, they can successfully lock them down once the unstoppable wears off. it was not uncommon for us to run into 3~4 stuns per team. uther is basically god right now. just walk into them and engage, follow up with divine storm when they try to do something about you.

I wish unranked was more populated. At some point after the 20th 10-minute-queue, our friend group started playing Storm League. It's gone okay, and kinda nice that we're able to play together and not waste a game's worth of time per night, no matter how many of us are online. The only time it's been terrible was the time in Bronze near the end of last season when people are just dumping their ranking so they can "have easier matches to get the quest rewards" ... but that doesn't work when everyone else is doing that too, so it just becomes more of a cluster gently caress of who can throw faster. Glad to be out of that hellhole now and up into Gold and climbing consistently.

I've finally decided to fiddle with this game (after trying it once a loooong time ago) and have been having enough fun playing as Zarya against only AI. Trying (and being yelled at) with DOTA players years ago has made me afraid to even try venturing out into playing with actual people. Will I be bullied for playing Zarya? :ohdear:

A good Zarya can ruin peoples day. Having said that, people will yell at you in this or any game for anything. Just mute your party if you get any guff, if people aren't playing this dead game for fun then they can gently caress off.

through thousands of posts in D&D over a decade, I now believe I know what I'm talking about. if I post forcefully and confidently, I can convince others that is true. no one sees through my facade.
I've always found Zarya to be a good and flexible hero that is an addition to any team. I particularly like her Particle Grenade build, which can give her surprising damage while also offering plenty of on-demand shielding.

Try her in quickplay, mute anyone who complains about how you're playing or pings you five times or any of that. Going against other players in the no-stakes mode is always going to be better than AI games which tend to reinforce bad habits, and quickplay tends to have relatively low toxicity.

WITCHCRAFT

AI reinforces bad habits like ignoring map awareness, team composition, and the like. It puts way less emphasis on working together, and the enemy team is way less likely to pull a trick that fucks your team royally when you don't know how to respond.

It is absolutely the place to practice your "hard skills" like learning what all the heroes do, how those abilities/talents/skills interact, etc. Most importantly, you can practice until you know when and where to cast your skills to make the best use, and you can learn to land skillshots until you have unerrring aim against human opponents.

Learning "I use personal barrier (Zarya)/reflect (Genji)/arcane shield (Medivh) when I'm being hit" is way different from learning how to bait a tower into focusing you, and then casting your ability at the last second to make the most of it. It takes a lot of mechanical practice and skill that have nothing to do with the enemy team being AI or human.

You can improve yourself a lot in AI games, if you try. You can also just not give a gently caress and still win by making the glowy things hit bad guys.

This is the pro advice.

For the most part you aren't gonna get any useful communication in QM, but for sure none will start with a dude criticizing the team or micromanaging you with attack/defend/retreat pings. Absolutely mute them early and pretend they're a bot, a dude raging for 30 minutes is surprisingly a drag on your enjoyment, so don't expose yourself.

We're all going to experience changes in our life but only the best of us will qualify for front row seats.

There is no way to say something like “play more carefully” without sounding like an rear end in a top hat, no matter how good you intentions are and how you phrase it. It’s a mistake to even try to attempt it. Encouragement does not exist when playing MOBAs with random people, everything you say will be interpreted as an attempt to say “hey, it’s not my fault we (might) lose!”
