Then of course you had the British and Germans POWs/"guests of the State" that were interned in the Curragh during WW2, which apparently consisted of hanging out, drinking, playing pool and shagging the locals

e: The Sonderkraftfahrzeug 250 ('special motor vehicle') was a light armoured halftrack, very similar in appearance to the larger Hanomag-designed Sd.Kfz. 251, and built by the DEMAG firm, for use by Nazi Germany in World War II.

It's the hypocrisy that quite rightfully did her in, not the offence in and of itself. If she wasn't spending her time calling people out and grandstanding her own moral purity no one would have cared about the hot nazi tweet revelations.

Same, I fully expected her to just ignore it. It's like she didn't get the memo that hypocrisy in politics doesn't matter any more.

The one thing I feel sad about is that the charge of anti-semitism is now officially just a weapon for inter-factional fights, which completely sucks. But I think we hit that point somewhere back when pronouncing Epstein wrong and re-tweeting an article from The Independent became evidence of Jew-hate.

Best part so far is the current Youth Chair saying she only sent the message of support to "friends". Must've been a friend who immediately rat-hosed you by posting it on Twitter then.

Not really but when you cast such a broad range of what you consider antisemitic with very harsh judgements and punishments you probably shouldn't go around talking about how you like a man in a Hugo Boss uniform.

Wouldn't Britain still have maps of at least where the most important things were (such as GPO buildings) from other quite recent events?

I wouldn't put it past the British army to manage to get lost even with maps and end up driving a tank through a pensioner's cottage, but like half the officer class (up to and including Churchill as British Secretary of State for War) would have been there in some capacity, unlike with Germany.

I don't think the idea was to make going around cities any harder, since there would have been landmarks in the cities. But Ireland on the 40's had no real connected motor way road networks*.

Going from one town to the next would have been incredibly confusing, particularly with the locals not co-operating with the invading forces.
As always I think the idea was to make the invaders life more difficult over "if the Tans can't find the signs to get to Athy, they'll give up and go home."

Hell we still don't have many linked motorways.
As a kid in the 90's, going to West Cork for a holiday was like a 5 to 6 hour drive.
Now with the Cork to Dublin motorway, it's about a 2 hour to 2 and 1/2 hour drive to get to Cork.
Then another hour or so to go from Cork to West Cork.

talking about which Nazis you'd like to gently caress is roughly a thousand times more antisemitic than pronouncing Epstein "Epshtein"

Nobody thinks it is, just like nobody thinks retweeting an Independent article is anti-semitic. But if you want to hold people to that rigid standard where even tangentially related, somebody-might-possibly-find-this-in-bad-taste references to Jewish people, Nazis, Israel etc. is classed as a resigning offence then this is where we end up.

If it helps she's also not sure whether transwomen are women, which is arguably a more valid reason for her not to be youth representative on the NEC than Nazi jokes.

He's spent most of his life around North London and has definitely heard that pronunciation more than the Americanised one.

everyone's already covered islington but further on that, he takes part in local religious observances (the Seder he was invited to at the start of the scandal was secretly filmed, iirc he does know how to pronounce at least the Yiddish for the ceremony) and has prominent jewish academic friends like most of the old-left do (his covid breach was Graeber's wake), so he's definitely herd "stein" pronounced correctly. To be more specific on Americanisation, the UK doesn't have quite the level of aversion to loan words the US does. It's unremarkable to pronounce cafe in any particular way, you'd absolutely say cleeque instead of click, etc. Idk how universal it is but when Einstein came up in school or UK TV it was always ein-schtine not ein-steen.

It'd have been far weirder to deliberately mispronounce a relatively familiar name, even if the papers might potentially have missed it.

It changes up in surnames especially in America because the Yiddish pronunciation is more like shtayn rhyming with stain which then easily dropped over to steen
