It varies a lot, the quickest I've seen was about six hours (bloke didn't even come by ambulance, he came for an outpatient appointment and collapsed on the way in. Felt fine that morning).

There were reports from China in january of people just collapsing in the streets. And we've seen reports from the west of people walking around with absurdly low oxygen saturations that should have had them hospitalised already. It's really kind of freaky

Walking pneumonia is a thing, and people's reactions to low oxygen saturation vary a lot. I suspect the "collapsing in the street" stuff might have been overstated (a lot of 5G and other conspiracies latched onto it claiming entire streets of people just dropped dead) but as one of the effects of Covid is clotting disorders, embolism and stroke can certainly knock you out like a light even if your only symptoms up that point had been mild.

As soon as the UK government starts vaccinating anybody, there's going to be a huge clamour to include other groups. Especially if lockdown restrictions are still in place.

So I can absolutely see the UK delaying vaccination of healthcare workers on some spurious grounds because if they gave it to us, they'd have to answer questions about why not the elderly, cancer patients, transplant patients, front-facing hospitality workers etc. etc. etc. Easier to just say it doesn't work/isn't safe/China bad.

The UN program that we have signed up for distributes 3% (I think) of the populations worth for healthcare workers and the highly vulnerable and then distributes up to 20% of the population but doesn't give any more until all program members get to that 20%. They'll have to start vaccinating because the scheme isn't designed to provide for most people and the government's current plan isn't to vaccine most of the populations anyway.

The UK government hasn't put in an order for the Sinovac vaccine so we won't be getting any doses except through the UN if it's shown to be the only effective vaccine.

That is pretty unlikely though, the UK government has 300 million total doses of 5 different vaccines on order, and at least one of those will likely work - I'd expect efficiency results to come out some time in November, and vaccinations to start in NHS workers in December/January depending on government competence. Sinovac is behind Oxford University/AstraZeneca and BioNTech/Pfizer but not by much, and a more effective vaccine gets faster results in the efficiency trials so who knows what comes first.

I think the government will try to avoid vaccinating the majority of the population and stick to the most vulnerable, I just don't think they'd vaccinate healthcare workers if they couldn't include other vulnerable groups without a significant delay.

That actually would be an interesting show. Probably more interesting back when said da was more likely to be "we kicked those wee cunts out of Germany so don't you loving start being one" than gammon dad.

Yea I'm not worried about government incompetence loving up vaccine production, thats mostly out of their hands. I am worried about the government loving up distribution of the vaccine when it's available and people flooding vaccination centers with no vaccine then getting a half-dose and being told they are perfectly safe.

This is what they did with the last season of Drag Race and it worked quite well (the person was still in the show but they never showed any interviews with them or had the hosts praising them etc). Probably a bit more difficult when his big loving fraktur head keeps bobbing up in the background of each shot though. Just have him with a crimewatch pixelated face at all times

Didn't someone post an FT article a week or so ago saying that the Gov had pre-ordered different vaccines in 60m dose batches, under the assumption that the vaccines would require two doses?

The implication being the gov is only planning on vaccinating half the population - healthcare workers and the most vulnerable.

Looking forward to ordering Chinese vaccines from the darkweb.

We've ordered

Adenovirus vaccines: 100 million doses Oxford University/AstraZeneca; 30 million doses Janssen
mRNA vaccines: 30 million doses BioNTech/Pfizer
Inactivated whole virus vaccines: 60 million doses Valneva
Protein adjuvant vaccines: 60 million doses GSK/Sanofi; 60 million doses Novavax

Most of them are looking like they'll be two-dose vaccines, but if more than one work we'll have enough for the majority of the population (which should also limit spread) - you can't ensure what works and what doesn't so making sure you've got enough for the most vulnerable groups in worse cases seems sensible?

I'd be arguing for the next go around that if you're going to have somebody to represent the ordinary members it should be an ordinary member themselves.

There was some statement in the press about this a couple of weeks ago I think, can't remember if it was from an actual minister or one of the medical advisers, flat out saying that people shouldn't assume there'd be a vaccine for everyone and it had been a mistake for people to think that, and that it would basically be for vulnerable people (ie anyone who can get a free flu jab, basically) healthcare workers, care home staff and some other groups, but definitely not for most younger people (the implication being rich people would just get it privately of course). I assumed it was one of those statements being made not too loudly so they could point to it later and say 'see, we said we'd do it this way'
