Nah they're talking about the temporal rep engines, which have a pretty nice rainbow trail effect.

the only problem is it's a really short trail on a lot of ships. the aegis engines have a really nice blue cylinder trail, they're probably my most used engine visual.

I kind of prefer the OG omega engine visuals for the chemical engine rocket nozzle effect. Assuming it's a fast ship anyway.

You get the same visual from Sol Defense as a mission reward, btw. (actually, I think it's a bit stronger)

I love the Feklhiri burning chemical fire with Smoky black trails behind the fire, but that never went onto an equippable engine effect.

Also, the vadwaur engine effect never went on an eqippable, did it? That was great.

The recent(ish) Fekhiri destroyer and carrier having that whole drag racer rocket engine fire effect when you go full impulse is the dumbest thing and I love it dearly. I kind of wish Cryptic made the freebie ships have proper cstore/lockbox level gimmicks, but the art guys definitely put their heart into them regardless.

The old Kar'fi had it too for the impulse trails, but not quite as well done and also when you turned the fire and the smoke curved at different rates and separated out into two different streams.

Too many people got mad about the Fleet Risian Corvette even though it's the best thing they've ever done for an event ship, so we can't have nice things :(

Wait, what went on with regard to the corvette? I’m aware of the fleet version existing but I didn’t realize there was hullaballoo.

That's the story I've been told by a couple people, that there was too much complaining (either about the added expense to get a "good" corvette or the free one not being best to begin with), so Cryptic axed the idea for future event ships. The Pilot Corvette is great, though.

Yeah getting a free ship wasn't good enough when there was an even gooder version of the free ship for extra. Basically we all got free icecreams except that kid over there paid fifty cents extra and got sprinkles on theirs. I'm angry about my free ice cream now.

The exasperated teacher and/or parent thus kicked the next esky full of ice creams with chocolate flakes into the dumpster. Also the ice creams had a star trek logo on them or something.

I haven't played since the Risian liner came out, so... what? Were they really complaining about having to buy the same upgrade packs that they'd need for any other available for free/EC ship?

Oh, right, STO players. Nevermind.

When the first legendary ship pack came out, they complained that it was too expensive. It works out to $30 per legendary ship, or $20 per ship on sale, but the fact that you have to buy the 10-pack was a source of huge complaints. Lots of people claiming that they would much rather buy the ships individually, even if the individual price was higher.

So, cryptic has released two more legendary ships individually, at a higher price. Which has lead to lots of complaints that the ships cost too much.

I'm not trying to defend cryptic here, just pointing out that some players will complain no matter what they do.

It's a f2p game, players complaining that everything isn't free is pretty much bog standard.

Does Cryptic whale hunt like whoa? Abso-loving-lutely. We could spill a lot of digital ink about predatory business practices and the way that they try to get people with gambling problems hooked on the idea of getting their favorite hero ship for bonuses that don't really even matter.

But at the end of the day it's not that hard to set up a dill farm*, get some zen, buy a T6 or two that you want, and cruise to trivializing what passes for an end game with golden mkXV everything.

*yes, even post-admiralty nerfs.

Oh, right, STO players. Nevermind.

Event ships normally come as fleet quality without needing to spend FSM, however they also normally come without the special hull bonuses (in the case of the Risian corvette, pilot maneuvers). Cryptic said they felt the corvette really should have piloting maneuvers, so they gave it a fleet variant that had them.

Now, that's a little weird to me. Cryptic could have just given the default escort pilot maneuvers, and I tend to give the motivations of any profit seeking entity a lot of skepticism. But I also think if it was part of some scheme to milk the player base they would have asked for something more expensive than a fleet module, especially since they're easy to get from T6 rep these days. So in this case I really do think weird internal compromises/standards make more sense.

I mean, it's cryptic. For all we know going in and replacing people's non-pilot Risan vettes with pilot versions might have involved some kind of hell-grade database fuckery or something.

Also remember the player base. There's a massive customer service issue there as well. As soon as you say that you're going to do that you're going to have a chunk of the player base rioting because they prefer the non-pilot version. Ok so now instead of just a search and replace in the database (assuming that's feasible or easy) you have to make it opt-in somehow.

The real profit seeking is keeping the event ships from having special gimmicks so they don't compete with the store or gamble box offerings. So far as I can tell it was just too blatantly obvious a thing to skip for the corvette but they didn't want to set a precedent for full featured event boats, so yeah a quick kludge to have it both ways.

speaking of the Mirror Bundle, if this isnt Cryptic being cryptic again this could mean that it will cost 4500 zen and not 6000 (25% off) - https://twitter.com/trekonlinegame/status/1318335256584462336?s=21

^^They fixed the stuck ships last patch. It's still a bad queue, just now you don't get stuck forever waiting for it to end.

In case you were wondering what else was wrong with this patch, the new legendary mirror gal-x has the wrong boff seating and is missing it's intel abilities. The blog and z-store claim that it has a LtC uni/comm station, but it's actuall a LtC eng/comm. My guess is they copy/pasted the fleet gal-x, and then didn't make all the intended changes to it.

Honestly it's... alright, but like a lot of modern queues it's just too drat long. Cut off one of the rescue segments or shave a minute off each segment or whatever and adjust the scoring accordingly. They got you logging in every day which is the intended goal, they don't need you milling about clicking space bar and f for twenty minutes.
