Nastyman posted:I get the sentiment of wanting to give people the benefit of the doubt as much as possible, but I don't believe any reputable tattoo artist is going to just let you walk around with 88 on your face without first explaining to you what it means to the entire rest of the western world. No reputable artist is going to do that tattoo full stop. When I was getting some of my (for the record, non-racist) tattoos done a guy came into the studio to ask about getting a tattoo on his neck. The artist asked what other tattoos he had (the studio had a policy of not doing what they termed "public skin" unless the person asking had other tattoos already) and the guy already had 2 full sleeves, so no problem there. The artist asked what he was thinking about getting, and the guy goes "A burning cross right round the side of my neck to under my ear" and the artist immediately says "Sorry, no, cant help you mate". The guy leaves, and the artist turns to me and says "I dont know for sure that guy was a racist, but... I sure as gently caress cant think of any other meaning for a burning cross, can you? And I'm not doing a loving racist tattoo". While chatting to them later (my tattoos took a while) they mentioned that, once someone does a racist/nazi/hateful tattoo, the racist shows their buddies, they come in looking for similar tattoos, and before you know it you are the artist who specialises in doing racist tattoos, because word has got around that you will do them and the racists hanging round your shop waiting for tattoos have scared off everyone else.

Jesus, I just said that someone’s cousin or something using their birth year in their Twitter handle is fine because context matters. Clearly the dude with 88 on his face and a bunch of Nordic runes is a Nazi and it would be dumb to argue that he gets the benefit of the doubt. It’s also cool and good that someone got caught flashing the OK sign Nazi-ly in a corporate photo because that’s a weird context to use it in. Same with those Air Force cadets (I think) who got caught doing it. Whole lot of being willfully obtuse itt

A group of people with smug smiles flashing the OK symbol apropos of nothing? Almost certainly a nazi symbol A group of people with smug smiles flashing the OK symbol blissfully unaware of a looming threat behind them such as a bear, an incoming plane, or a chainsaw-wielding murder? Not nazi imagery and good example of dramatic irony

I read a similar anecdote about a bartender recently. The writer was chatting with him when some other guy came in and sat down. The bartender immediately told him to get the gently caress out, and kept saying it until the guy stopped whining and left. He turned to the writer and said something to the effect of 'I know that looked bad but that guy was a nazi, and their entire MO is to have one nice one come in so you don't think it's a big deal, and that guy brings friends and next thing you know you're a nazi bar.' Fister Roboto posted:Toobin for a Reuben This is more of a incident you build your cultural anti-masturbation bias case on. When I was getting my (also non-racist) tattoos done, the place (in addition to having a similar rule about tattoos on the neck/face) just straight up had a sign that was like, 'do not even ask for racist tattoos or we will throw you out/kick your rear end'.
