Yeah the fact they can fly away, unlike chickens, definitely increases the difficulty.

Re: mask stuff, several health organisations seem to have deliberately misled the public about a couple of things.

First, apparently for political/economic reasons, the likelihood of spread by surface contact vs airborne (and floating) particles.

Second, apparently for logistical reasons (healthcare worker supply), the effectiveness of masks.

You can think what you like about the reasons for this, but if you check the timing of various data availability vs public statements, it's fairly obvious that it happened.

I remember the thread making fun of a dude in rural Wisconsin (I think?) wearing an n95 in February. But by March lol no

I also remember some concern about people not knowing how to put on n95s properly and that they should leave them for essential workers instead of panic-buying them by the box but nothing about masks causing infections

The initial advice was that masks of all kinds weren't effective, until enough worthy people had their n95s, then it was OK to say that masks work.

I suspect some of that mask mockery came from people who took the previously mentioned health organisations seriously.

For example, while I never commented on masks, I did tell a bunch of people that surface transmission was more likely than airborne, because that was what the most notable and (at the time) most respected health authorities were saying.
Turned out to not only be bullshit (which can happen innocently due to faulty information), but bullshit delivered despite the deliverer knowing it's probably bullshit.

Needless to say, my respect for and trust in these organisations has declined.

I'm not sure if you're only talking about this thread, but up until June 5 the WHO continued to stand by their recommendation that the general public should not wear masks. Their stated reasons were threefold: to avoid mask shortages, to avoid a false sense of security that would result in increased risk taking, and because masks might increase transmission due to improper use and handling.

Yeah iirc the WHO's recommendations were being poo poo on in this thread way before June. April was a huge month for makers of home made masks, it felt like literally everyone was wearing those while the WHO's recommendations simply weren't being updated. Medical opinions were being updated and proliferating long before the WHO changed any of their recommendations

April and May was a time for posts like "gently caress I found an unopened package of N95s in my garage, how do I donate these". Like states were having to do weird smuggling shenanigans just to prevent essential medical supplies from being intercepted and seized by the feds, PPE distribution was totally hosed

Why would it do that!?
The UK took it further and rushed in shipments of faulty PPE from across the globe from whoever had a strong gift game. Don't worry now things have got better though, now our govt's mates spontaneously form companies outta nowhere granted hunnerds of millions to buy it for us so they can skim their cut

sucks to be right
The White House put Jared Kushner in charge of forming a crack team of PPE procurement specialists to buy up every mask available and they brought in a bunch of 20-something volunteer interns and the interns went "Sooooo we're assisting the team, right?" and told them "No you ARE the team, hit those phones!"
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/05/us/jared-kushner-fema-coronavirus.html

They were handed a list of Trump-friendly businesses who had no PPE production experience and told to prioritise them over legitimate PPE producers
https://www.businessinsider.com.au/jared-kushner-coronavirus-task-force-prioritized-ppe-trump-associates-nyt-2020-5?r=US&IR=T

States and hospitals were pretty much blockaded from shipping in their own PPE supplies and Homeland Security would intercept deliveries at the airport and redirect them to the national stockpile
https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/04/hospitals-face-a-white-house-blockade-for-coronavirus-ppe.html
Hospitals had to disguise their PPE orders and arrange to have them dropped off in food delivery vans which each took different routes to minimze the chances that the feds didn't cotton on and confiscate them
https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/skbaer/coronavirus-ppe-masks-shipment-doctor-fbi

Somtimes when the FBI were sneakily investigating state/private deals to buy PPE so they could swoop in and grab them under the Defense Production Act they discovered that the deal was a complete scam. Here's one where 39 million promised masks just didn't exist:
https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-04-11/coronavirus-seiu-masks-fraud-fbi

Companies that had only just been registered and had zero supply chain experience were handed no-bid contracts for tens of millions of dollars to procure PPE at massively inflated prices ..... and were scammed by grifters over and over
