Wireless electricity seems like the kind of thing that would make those “wireless networks are killing us” conspiracies true.

Kibayasu posted:Wireless electricity seems like the kind of thing that would make those “wireless networks are killing us” conspiracies true. We already have wireless electricity in loads of places, induction chargers for phones and toothbrushes etc. It's just.... Not a great idea at distance. There are high power versions, 1 kilowatt +, for charging cars. People have had the idea for running cars this year for over 100 years, charge the road and run electric cars on it. It's just always been way too inefficient. But they're getting better. But that's boring near field, or non radiative power transfer. What you want is far field, radiative transfer, where you can beam power over kilometres using microwaves. Aramoro fucked around with this message at 00:21 on Oct 25, 2020 |

my best friend in high school was the head of theater tech. whenever the stage lights needed to be adjusted, they'd send me up a 20' wooden ladder (placed along the wooden seats) to poke at them with a broom handle. several people would hold the ladder, since it was missing one of four key bolts it was a different time

Apparently when powerlines would originally go up, farmers would lease their land for the towers surprisingly willingly, but then the lines would show unexpectedly high losses. Power companies would stop by and find farmers had tons of wire wrapped around in their houses to leech power from the transmission lines for their own houses Sounds kinda dubious to me but it's a fun story

But since Treat replaced Tom, wouldn't that make him the real substitute?

I'd believe with large enough coils farmers could power useful loads. Really just making a DIY transformer at that point.

I have a similar situation toward the back of my hay field and I’ve thought about trying to power something small like a raspi from it, I figure the hardest part would be getting a consistent and correct voltage, but that shouldn’t be TOO hard, just need some good filtering I imagine.
