Austin Walker at Vice (a pretty firm socialist) has a review up and doesn't have any major criticisms of the story: https://www.vice.com/en/article/pkdy5y/watch-dogs-legion-review. Though in general is review is frustrating because if you follow his work it would seem like WD:L is a game made for him personally, but he's pretty negative based on some rather petty niggles (basically "it's not a realistic vision of a popular movement that can overthrow the government" and "it doesn't totally replicate the full gamut of human emotional interaction", and my response to that would be "no poo poo").

I don't disagree with anything he said tbh.

The game still looks like something I would enjoy tho.

Austin's problem mostly just seems to be it's like on the precipice of something really really good but doesn't reach it. Which is pretty disappointing. But not outright bad.

I remember thinking Skyrim and/or Saints Row III were overheating my 360 back in the day but it turned out my system was just old and dying. Not to discount everyone having crash issues, this sounds Bethesda-on-console bad, but that breathless tweet about system bricking gave me similar vibes. That, and AC Odyssey still crashes my PS4poor regularly after who knows how many patches. I expected this a little

Anyway, I enjoyed this quote from the the RPS review:

At least I’m glad the division 1/2 included this, it would otherwise be extremely... troublesome instead of only somewhat troublesome.

There's lots of reports of no framerate difference between Low and Ultra for people.

The nvidia game ready drivers aren't out yet though, and neither is the game officially.

Without. I figured raytracing would be a noticeable hit on performance with my 2070 so I didn't bother

I wouldn't know anything about that, definitely a performance difference when messing with the presets for me and yeah the current Nvidia game ready drivers are 3 weeks old so there may be some gains to be found there - Also I'm in Australia and the game officially came out 8 hours ago?

welp I have a game breaking bug.

Quit to main menu doesn't work which means the game isn't autosaving for me now. Every time I load I get sent back to the last plot mission. Hoping it's just due to using a VPN. I was enjoying the game quite a bit up to that point even if it's certainly lighter on plot than previous ones.

I can only assume there’s literally 0 plot after the “getting the procedurally generated band back together” intro.

I'm very early in, but while WD2 is more like a bunch of mini episodes, each one still felt a lot more structured and focused than what I've seen of Legion.

There's definitely story but it seems to be similar to Mafia 3 where it's gated behind activities. At least there seems to be a lot more variety in the activities than that game had.

EDIT: \/ It will definitely launch Uplay.

I might actually do some quests tomorrow.

Game is running alright, considering I have everything turned on, 1440p with DLSS on Balanced, RT on Ultra is getting me ~60fps average, some dips below (notably up high where you can see far), going up to ~90fps in more enclosed places.

The plot/writing so far is... uh, like a good British sandwich. Full of ham and cheese. But that's to be expected and it's not offensively bad it's just.. well, the level you'd expect. Actual gameplay wise I am having a ton of fun with the gadgets I have so far, and my Spiderbot bro is excellent.

He's your mission giver for everything so far including side quests ( I only got as far as finishing the first primary missions in Camden ). I'd go out on a limb and say that they needed an AI assistant personality with a little more pep than say Siri/Google/Cortana/Alexa, which flies in the face of the grim poo poo you're involved with, and kinda sucks the wind out of those scenes - but if he was a bit more dour he'd be a) boring and b) the game would be getting really depressing, which I think they're trying to avoid. It's tonally weird all over again.

From one of the podcasts I was briefly listening to it seems like everyone has their own personal Bagley, responding to emails, booking automated cars, ordering food, all reporting back to Blume. Dedsec's Bagley operates out of their own stolen server, but still has access to Blume's networks.

I've been fighting the urge to watch too much gameplay since my copy won't arrive until Friday at the earliest, but from the few times I've popped into a stream so I can see some of the characters in action... do they all have weird, pitch-shifted voices to avoid sounding like Oblivion/Skyrim NPCs? Because all of the ones I've heard so far sound jarring as hell. :stare:

If you don't get a "report crash to ubisoft" dialog when it goes to desktop, it's probably NOT a crash. I suspect the cheat system/DRM decides you have done something bad and just kills the process. There's no trace of a crash in the Windows error logs either.

(I did manage to get it to actually crash too, by trying to mess with the Uplay overlay FPS counter. That one threw an error reporting dialog, which is why I suspect these other "crashes" are different)

Some more research: Check out the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\logs\launcher_log.txt" file. I suspect there's a line like this one every time the time the game "crashes":

code:
[21028] 2020-10-29 04:09:31 [ 5960] ERROR DenuvoGetGameTimeTicket.cpp (157) Unknown game response.

Even if this poo poo doesn't work at all my wonder at this discovery was worth $15 of ubisoft connect I guess

btw, seems to be literally impossible for me to hit 60fps on a Ryzen 3700X and 1060 6gb at 1080p. If that's a deal breaker, I'd stay far away. Doubt it'll ever run better given ubisoft's recent history with open world games that tank PCs.

as someone who's spent a combined four weeks in london as a tourist, I can say that this version of london is ridiculously good in my eyes. very odd to be able to navigate down compressed versions of sightseeing walks, whether from trafalgar past somerset house down towards the tate modern, or down brick lane over towards shoreditch. weird!!!
