The microcenter near me has the ryzen 5 3600xt for sale at $20 more than the 3600 non xt, from what I can tell the main difference is slightly higher clock speed by default and it comes with the wraith spire cooler instead of the wraith stealth cooler, are those two things worth it? I think my priority would be whichever cooler is quieter over some couple degrees temp difference tbh

I’ll let someone else speak on the chip

For $20 sure why not, just don't spend serious money to move to an X or XT version of the same # AMD CPU. No stock cooler I know of will be particularly quiet if you care about that.

Hey thread, I'm working on a parts list for updating my gaming PC. It's a fairly budget focused build that I've had for 7 years now so is not only a bit creaky but is having some issues. Here's the list of bits I've picked out so far with a few notes, I already have the case, SATA SSD and power supply (my old one was having major issues so I've already replaced that this year) and am not planning on getting any new graphics card until at least April so the 2060 there is something of a placeholder since I have no issues with my current 1060 and am waiting on any potential 3060 card. The main thing I'm curious about is the difference between the motherboard in there and the B550 Tomohawk. From my reading they seem fairly equivalent with the Pro being £30 cheaper and having 2 extra USB ports (very useful to me as someone who uses a lot of ports) but I don't know if there's some additional technical stuff differentiating them that I haven't noticed. In terms of use I'm currently using a 1080p 60hz monitor but am looking at going up to a 1440p monitor in the new year. So I snagged an rtx 3080, and I want to take the opportunity to refresh my computer. Right now I'm running an MSI B350 gaming pro carbon. Is it worth getting a new MB to run the new zen chips coming out, or should I wait for them to come out and try to get a cheap 3700x or so? I'm thinking about getting a new case as well (Phanteks 500rgb) so the extra work shouldn't factor in. Also I have a EVGA 600 B1, 80+ BRONZE 600W power supply from 2017. Will that suffice? I use my PC for Streaming video games, Photoshop and light video editing.

All other things being equal (clocks, cores, etc), Zen 3 is about 20% faster in games than Zen 2. Up to you whether that's worth the price. You'll likely be able to grab a used 3700X for ~$150 here soon, though, and I'd expect the Zen 3 CPUs to take maybe a $50 haircut sometime in late Q1 next year. So if you can wait, you could save some money, but then you're also going 4-5 months with hampered performance. Up to you.

So I have the ROG Strix B550 -F gaming mobo sitting at best buy for pick up. I looked for the memory compatibility to go ahead and pull the trigger on some new ram and what I'm reading is that zen 3 works best with 4000mhz. I can't find any that support 32gb in a 16x2 configuration on the qvl list, and I'm mostly just gaming at 1440p widescreen if that matters. Should I return it and find a different mobo (for whatever reason really, I just want the drat usb ports to power my rift through an extension cord and there not to be ghosts in my computer anymore that shut off my games randomly) or just stick with 16gb and find some 4000mhz 8x2 ram? Will support expand when zen 3 is released and the bios is updated making it better to wait?

I don't know that any motherboard really has much in the way of official DDR4-4000 support, especially not in 16x2. Unofficially the B550-F supports overclocking RAM up to 4600 it looks like. But the board isn't the limiting factor for memory overclocking AMD anyway unless you're using something super cheap, it's the CPU's memory controller itself that kept the recommended RAM speed down to like 3600.

The performance difference between 4000@CL16 for $270/32GB and 3800@CL16 for $150/32GB is gonna be like...2% at most, and less than that more often than not. I wouldn't worry about it.

Planning on building a new PC with 5600x/5800x, X570, and likely 6800XT or 3080 whenever those reviews come out(and once we get past the vaporware phase), but my 1TB SSD is really too small to keep all my games installed at once now, since I swear that's like 5 modern games tops. I figure I might as well get a PCI4.0 since it will complement the above whenever the GPU direct memory access becomes a thing in games, which both AMD and Nvidia seem to be doing this generation. SSD reviews seem to suck, but is there anything I should be looking out for? USA resident, multi-use PC, gaming + work (game dev, but no super special stuff since I'm RDC-ing in). If you put a NVMe card into the second M.2 slot (they'll be labeled), then two of the SATA ports get disabled and you can't use them. You would only be using SATA ports for, at this point, something like a DVD drive, or if you have any older HDDs that you wanted to bring over. Considering that the motherboard has 6 SATA ports, losing one or two is unlikely to matter since you'd need, at most, one of those 6 for a DVD drive if you don't have any old drives you wanted to use.

They're faster but not that much faster in real world tasks. If you're happy with the capacity of your current one I'd just reuse it until you feel like a size increase and having less money. They'll always be cheaper and bigger later on.

Cool, yeap, I got to Checkout a few times but it just kept erroring out. Finally I managed to get through once but then the page just never loaded. Stayed white, the little "Stop/Refresh" icon in the browser suggested nothing was loading. Refreshed the page and yea, sold out. I've tried maybe half a dozen AMD/ATI products over my ~20 years in computing and never once had a good experience but I might try the new 6000 series if I can actually get my hands on one, because this poo poo is loving dumb.
