to hear? the glass harmonica, check it out it as invented by Benjamin Franklin and there's this absolutely insane German man who is the only one in the world who makes them, they cost upwards of 30k but they are what angels sound like I think. To play, ukulele or a nice 5 piece drum kit I miss my drums so much |

Glass harmonica is so cool. I believe it is also believed to have contributed to the death of several famous composers through lead exposure, incl beethoven iirc? |

these are some good instruments! i liked seeing the handpan video. here are my top 3: 3. bandoneon - utterly gorgeous tone. it's a portable organ! this instrument has so much mystery surrounding it. i love my bandoneon so much, i once paid someone to paint a picture of it, lol 2. cello - my choice for prettiest sounding instrument. cello is versatile - it can be melody, chords, bassline, whatever. and playing it doesn't beat up your body the way upright bass does 1. piano - duh. piano is an incredibly versatile instrument. it can do anything. and it sounds really good. incredibly easy to start, maddeningly hard to master. As far as cool instruments people may not have heard of, there's the bandoneon of course, but I also quite like the melodeon as a slightly more straightforward accordion. The ewi is also really cool and I would play the heck out of one if I had one

The Mellotron might be my favourite instrument, such a haunting string sound and it pretty much defined progressive music in the seventies. I have a soft spot for early music tech like modular synths, just walls and walls of gear with wires sticking out, LEDs flashing, and wooden veneers. |

And bands like Tangerine Dream and Popol Vuh paved the way for such huge innovations in music, despite being so early into adulthood. I love that the early synth models overheated and went out of tune after twenty minutes, making recording such a massive challenge. |

There was a gospel and blues guy called Washington Phillips who did a handful of beautiful, beautiful recordings in Dallas between 1927 and 1929, and the nature of the instrument or instruments he played on them is still an open mystery, maybe a thing called a manzarene which he'd take half an hour to assemble before a session. Whatever it was, the first time I heard it I thought it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever heard, so that's my favorite instrument. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=or1oZ35NA2U

blaise rascal posted:question: what is efveryone's favorite musical instrument ? I admire electric guitar's expressiveness and versatility, it can sound a lot like a voice esp when you're going nuts with bends and whammy bars and fx. as a rhythm instrument or accompaniment I think it can be a great complement to the human voice. like I'm not sure what other kind of instrument could put the ferocity into the solo in this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcwwcV8MJSQ I mean, that's not always what you're looking for, but I just find it amazing also guitar solos in some of the classic steely dan songs, like "don't take me alive" and "kid charlemagne," that is some magic right there rick beato calls the kid charlemagne solo "one of the greatest solos of all time" lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKIC9zbSJoE |
