Sam Matthews is the living, breathing embodiment of why you can not and should not argue in good faith with the right. There is clear evidence that he failed to do his job and that his successor helped clean up his mess, then he went on national loving television, crying crocodile tears, to argue with a straight face that black is white, up is purple and down is Wednesday. He is a straight up sociopath and the poster boy for why some people can only be combatted by calling them out every time they open their mouth until they get too tired to keep pushing their bullshit. When reason doesn't work, go for pure attrition.

LordVorbis posted:

I honestly wish we also had a "do you think the government is doing a good job" just for my own satisfaction in cognitive dissonance.

"Nope, I think the current government is doing terribly with everything, but I'll still vote them in again! Because I am a fish incapable of remembering more then the last five minutes."*

There are a lot of people who genuinely believe that you have a moral duty to vote and can only hold people to account if you cast a vote, even if your choice is complete dogshit. This is why the principle of not voting and understanding why you are not obligated to uphold any given political system is so important to instill in people if there's to be any hope of changing things.

He wasn't doorstepped, it was a prepared statement.

Honestly after everything he's been through he can say what he likes, but I agree with Shabi that it has obliterated the EHRC report and I just don't see any good for anyone coming out of blowing this row up again. It's not good for Starmer, it's not good for Corbyn, not for Labour, not for Momentum, not for the Left in general, not for anti-racism campaigners in general, just not good for anybody. Everyone comes out looking bad.

So if it was me I'd have left out the sentence about "the scale of the problem was also dramatically overstated for political reasons". It might be true, but everyone who is going to believe that already knows.

I completely agree. I don't know what he was thinking or trying to accomplish with that, and then his suspension is sad, although not unexpected. What a loving mess. (Then again, I have never rated him particularly highly on the brains front. I think McDonnell, for instance, is much cleverer. I would have really liked to see him as chancellor). it;s very depressing.

If RLB was leader then yes maybe there was an argument that he should have kept quiet, just accepted his reputation was permanently ruined from the report and the press spin on it but not wanting to drag the left successor into the same stupid slur campaign. With Starmer as leader he absolutely needs to continue to press the point that this was primarily sabotage of him and the left.

Eh, he personally doesn't come out of the report looking that bad. I don't think it damaged his reputation any more than the ongoing dragged-out issue had already. And I don’t see how his statement helped the party.

FWIW I believe that while of course AS was weaponised it was also real. I know lots here disagree. Arguing about it just feels like banging one's head against a brick wall (on both sides). Meanwhile one of the worst governments we have had in years allows coronvirus to ravage the country while their cronies exploit it. That's the depressing element. The party has become as polarised as society generally.

corbyn's weird obstinancy is both one of his biggest weaknesses and also what allowed him to not have a breakdown or kill himself 12 months into the 5 year press barrage like most people would have

personally i'm glad he continues to speak the truth even though its a hugely divisive and pretty stupid thing to do. but then I've left labour and just enjoy seeing him not roll over and die.

what the labour right really wanted to draw a line under was "yes we agree with the telegraph and co, the corbynists were fundamentally racist and we should never do that ever again" and yes its disruptive for him to not accept that but... good.

labour infighting will literally never end, one of the couple of political rules my parents taught me as a kid that still hold up is "in times of crisis and opportunity labour will descend into infighting"
the starmer unity plan was to kill the left and have the left accept that without comment

e: like hes a weird dude, the press spent 5 years taping a cage to his face and having rats eat it and he still comes out and says "2+2 = 4" in a press release

I tells you how good a job people think they're doing of representing them, and it's directly related to their funding. I don't think reigniting the row is going to improve his reputation. Everybody who is going to believe the complaints were politically motivated already believes that. All the arguments have been made.

Plus, at the risk of this being unpopular, I still find it unedifying for anybody on the left to downplay complaints of racism no matter how exaggerated and politically motivated they are. The Labour party is institutionally racist in so many ways, we shouldn't be defending it. If Corbyn wants to rebut the vitriol levelled at him it would be far more productive to reiterate that the handling of complaints was deliberately hampered by other factions of the party, or point to the good things he did improving the processes, rather than clumsily saying there wasn't enough racism to justify this level of upset.

EDIT

Guardian posted:

Corbyn, presumably, still believes that Labour party is necessariyl the same as the Labour movement.

And until the unions peel away, he's not wrong, the fate of the movement is still irrevocably tied to the party whilst the unions still support it.

But the unions probably won't stop supporting it until the socialist MPs quit.

Which they won't whilst the unions stay.

And so forth.

The only non-league game I ever saw police at the football was Slough vs Woking in 1996 in the Conference. It was also the only game of the season that Slough would segregate the crowds, mainly because Woking. And funnily enough, the segregation wasn't reciprocated in the return fixture. Of course, the police presence for the following season's first round cup tie against Cardiff was considerably higher, mainly because of what happened to Slough after Millwall lost there in the first round in 1983
