SNAP actually generates more money than it costs, if I recall correctly.

These people do not understand how supply/demand works on even an Econ 101 level, places need customers and people on welfare are customers. Hell Wal-Mart gets tons of its money from people on welfare.

It's like all the reporting on food spoilage and USDA food box inefficiencies earlier this year, if they'd just boosted SNAP payments or offered everyone a one-time free EBT card... that poo poo would've sold pretty close to standard projected schedule, in normal stores, like it normally does. It's not perfect, but it maintains a functioning supply chain and preserves as many jobs as possible.

Because demand for food products is going to exist at predictable baseline levels from the population, but the average consumer's ability to pay can (also predictably) be crippled by a pandemic economy.

Right-wingers are just too afraid of the population getting accustomed to government doing useful things. So instead of simply funding a functional system with some bonus during recessions, everything has to be some kind of gimmick or lobbyist's idea.

Edit: honestly the whole framing on welfare is just trashed in this country. If someone's working more than 30 hours a week and needs welfare to stay housed and fed, their employer is the actual welfare beneficiary since that person's likely not an outlier on the company payroll.

Added to the fact that people don't have time to think about politics or follow the news when they're constantly busy. This is why the working poor can't be allowed to have too much free time. Because they'd have more time to make an informed decision regarding elections.

Instead, you have people who are forced to decide how they want to get their news. One biased source? Doesn't sound great. But neither does gathering your news from 6 different sources and distilling that down into a more accurate portrayal of what happened. So people just pick the one "comfortable" station they know (the one that makes them feel better/confirms their views) because they don't have 2 hours a night to be informed. This is why soundbites basically rule the political arena: people want to get their "news" in like 10 seconds or less. Impatient sure, but also understandable if you work 60 hours a week.

Network Propaganda has a pretty good breakdown of the media troubles in the modern era, especially the asymmetry in radicalization and departures from objectivity. Even the few left-wing outlets which might tonally mirror the right-wing loony sources like InfoWars and Breitbart, will still maintain connections to journalistic outlets with classic norms like fact-checking and objective analysis. These connections are strong enough to fend off things like the PizzaGate conspiracies and similar BS.

Boils down to the reality that there are almost zero left-wing consumers who won't still value info sources like NPR/PBS/WP/NYT/BBC, even with a hard-left partisan or ideological personal preference. While the GOP media sphere has kinda become a modern John Birch Society, with its partisan consumers reflexively opposed to these mainstream outlets that still do prudent fact checks and conduct serious investigations, to the point that it's become borderline inbred.

There's also the problematic mainstream media approach to performative fairness (entertaining both sides of an argument regardless of their merits), rather than objective fairness (entertaining both sides of an argument when both sides are rooted in our shared understanding of reality) which is certainly dryer but serves the public good.

Good book with lots of analysis and info-graphics, and it's pretty accessible to anyone who keeps track of US politics and media. Not sure whether it's kosher to link the full pdf since it can be paid for, but they've published full chapters for free, so search for what you need?

Just consider how unbelievably powerful the Democratic party must be, in this dude's imagination. They've got universal international participation in this conspiracy, regardless of any positive or negative relationships with the US or each other. And this is them one step above their weakest, when they're out of power?

How could such a powerful group be meaningfully opposed by a lone elderly famous business doofus? They couldn't. So how would this guy not lump Trump in as a patsy?

I have done my best to respect the diverse opinions regarding COVID-19 over these past few months, however the ER nurse that posted this brilliantly sums up my train of thought :

Please just take politics out of it and read this with an open mind using common sense.

"Anyone out there who can tell me what our end game is with the covid 19?

What is the magic formula that is going to allow us to sound the all clear?
Is it zero cases?

The only way that will happen is if we just stop testing and stop reporting.
Is it a vaccine?

It took 25 years for a chicken pox vaccine to be developed.

We have a flu vaccine that is only 40 to 60% effective and less than half of the US population choose to get one, and roughly 20,000 Americans will die of the flu or flu complications, (usually the people who got vaccinated.)

Oh, you'll mandate it, like other vaccines are mandated, (because products that are safe and work need to be mandated.)

We already have a growing number of people refusing vaccines that have been administered for decades, however they have never been proven safe!

Do you really think people will flock to get a fast tracked, quickly tested vaccine, whose long term side effects and overall efficacy are anyone's best guess?

How long are we going to cancel and postpone and reconsider?

You aren't doing in person school until second quarter?

What if October's numbers are the same as August's?

You moved football to spring?

What if next March is worse than this one was?

When do we decide quality of life outweighs the risks?

I understand Covid can be deadly or very dangerous for SOME people, but so are strawberries, shellfish and Peanut butter.

We take risks multiple times a day without a second thought.

We know driving a car can be dangerous, we don't leave it in the garage. Many speed and don't wear seat belts.

We know the dangers of smoking, drinking and eating fried foods, we do it anyway.

Is hugging Grandma really more dangerous than rush hour on the freeway?

Is going out with friends after work more risky than 4 day old gas station sushi?

Or operating a chainsaw?

When and how did we so quickly lose our free will and give up our liberty?

Is there a waiver somewhere I can sign that says, "I understand the risks, I choose a life with Hugs and Smiles, the State Fair, going to Church, hugging my Family?

I understand that there is a minuscule possibility I could die (less than .01%), however I will most likely end up feeling sick for a few days depending on how much of a priority I have made my health.

I understand I could possibly pass it to someone else, if I'm not careful, however I can pass any virus onto someone else.

I'm struggling to see where or how this ends.

We either get busy living or we get busy dying.

When God decides it's your time, you don't get any mulligans, so I guess I would rather spend my time enjoying it and living in the moment and not worrying about what ifs and maybes, and I bet I'm not the only one. When does the government stop moving the goal post out every time we reach it? I wish the government would stop trying to fear monger us all into hypochondriacs. Just remember it's a VIRUS and like all viruses it must run it's course through the population for immunity to be established, just like all the other plagues, pandemics and epidemics.

Which no one would have known she was, had she not loudly expressed "concern" that her Trump vote would be destroyed by the deep state

I immediately tucked tail and ducked inside the building because it was my turn. def would've been too chickenshit to say anything if I hadn't seen the poll workers counting off how many people to let in for a batch of votes

The buffoon in the White House just brokered two Middle East Peace Accords, something that 71 years of political intervention and endless war failed to produce. He has now been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by 3 separate world leaders.

The buffoon in the White House is the first president that has not engaged us in a foreign war since Eisenhower.

The buffoon in the White House promised to destroy ISIS, and kept his promise. Something Obama promised to do, but couldn’t.

The buffoon in the White House has had the greatest impact on the economy, bringing jobs, and lowering unemployment to the Black and Latino population of ANY other president. Ever!

The buffoon in the White House has exposed the deep, widespread, and long-standing corruption in the FBI, the CIA, the NSA, and the Democratic party.

The buffoon in the White House turned NATO around and had them start paying their dues.

The buffoon in the White House neutralized the North Koreans, stopped them from developing a further nuclear capability, sending missiles toward Japan, and threatening the West Coast of the US.

The buffoon in the White House repositioned our embassy to Jerusalem, something every president before him promised to do, but NEVER had the guts to do.

But for the Wuhan caused pandemic, the Buffoon in the White House has stood up to China, brought hundreds of businesses back to the US, and revived the US economy well beyond anything his predecessor thought possible…..without a “magic wand.”

The buffoon in the White House has accomplished the appointing of two Supreme Court Justices, nominated an incredibly well qualified candidate for the current SCOTUS vacancy, and will soon have placed close to 300 Federal Judges on the federal bench.

The buffoon in the White House lowered your taxes and caused your stock market to move to record levels over 100 times, positively impacting the retirements of tens of millions of citizens.

The buffoon in the White House fast-tracked the development of a COVID Vaccine - it will be available within months - we still don't have a vaccine for SARS, Bird Flu, Ebola, or a host of diseases that arose during previous administrations.

The buffoon in the White House rebuilt our military which the Obama administration had crippled and had fired 214 key generals and admirals in his first year of office.

The buffoon in the White House uncovered and curtailed rampant illegal immigration and widespread sex and drug trafficking in the United States and beyond.

The buffoon in the White House works for free and has lost well over 2 billion dollars of his own money in serving - and done all of this and much more in the face of relentless undermining and opposition from people who are threatened because they know they are going to be exposed as the criminals that they are if he is re-elected.

I got it, you don't like him. How special of you. He is serving you and ALL the American people. What are you doing besides calling him names?"
