Went down into the shed around half 6, emerged dirty and covered in sawdust around 11. On the plus side I got a massive chunk on a serving platter I'm putting together for mum and dad's Christmas present. Shaped, edges rounded over with the router and got it up to 240 grit. Tomorrow I'll do 320, spray it and let dry to raise the little fibers, resand then take it through to about 1500/2000 grit and oil it up and call it done. Might throw a rope through the thinner handle end to facilitate hanging, haven't decided yet. Also while waiting for my battery to recharge I got my grandad's old axe from 40 grit up to 500 on the grinder, on goes the arduous task of hand sanding it up to 1500 grit wet and dry. Might buff it up too

The biggest difference I've noticed is going from 40 through to 600 on the axe head, it went from clearly defined sanding marks to a hard to pick, semi shiny line. Wood is a bit easier to hide sanding issues in but. Having said that I took the cheese knife handle I made up to 1500 and it's like glass smooth but it's also because it's gonna sit in hand. Honestly the best thing you can do is go up to 320, then spray it down with water in a sprayer bottle and let it dry then go again. The little fibers raise out with the moisture so it gets rid of any fibers and gets pretty smooth. Anything over 320 on a door is a waste especially if you're finishing it with a clear coat imo

Micromesh sanding pads go all the way up to 12000 and I know I’ve used them on wooden pens and stuff in the past and they become really dumb level smooth when you get to that level. I really should invest in a set for my model car building stuff for polishing up the clear coat on them but I haven’t got around to it and anything over 4000 is a bit of a waste really.

Peter Brown on youtube does a lot of resin stuff and uses a set of micromesh pads to get see-through resin. I feel its a bit of overkill on wood though. First humid day after finishing would wreck it.
