FWIW If you finish Hearts of Stone before the main story and you don't interfere with Gaunter & Olgierd at the end he'll owe you a favor, and one of the options is that he will tell you exactly what you need to do with Ciri for the best possible outcome.

The horse thieving choice doesn't count towards the ending, right? I recall it not counting, but it also seems like something that would count because it's similar to snowball fight and trashing Avallach's lab.

Play the DLCs now! Hearts of Stone has better writing than even the main game, and Blood and Wine is a beautiful place to explore and a much need vacation for Geralt.

I'll amend this suggestion (which is a correct one), and just mention that you should save B&W until after you're done with HoS and everything else you want to get done in Velen/Skellige. The reason I say this is because once you hit fantasy France, you will never want to go back to the the poo poo strewn land of swamp Velen. It's just so much brighter and nicer, and feels more complete if you head there and decide "yep, never going back to shitfarming dirtville".

It does not. There are only 5 that count

Snowball fight or drinking
Refusing cash from Emyr or not
Wrecking the lab or not
Going to see Skjall's grave or not
Sending Ciri in by herself or going with her.

Can't overemphasize how nice Toussaint is. I've used to just ride around at leisure pace from quest maker to another just enjoying the views. And people having problems more in line of "how to get ancient viagra" instead of "should we let the tree monster purge the weak"..

I'm slowly closing in on clearing the map of ? marks and all the quests/contracts I can do in Velen on my first playthrough. Just hit level 20 but some of these remaining contracts are showing as mid30s so I may have to come back.

I just love riding from one point to another and seeing weird poo poo on the ride. There are so many encounters that I don't think are part of quests or markers, but still flesh out the world even more. It's fun.

People say not to get caught up in clearing ?s but I really enjoy it. I can see how if it's something people feel compelled to do, it would be joyless, like anything people feel compelled to do.

I'm not tracking down all those siren-poo poo-spattered barrels in Skellige, though, that poo poo's for losers.

It is worth checking out ?s on islands in Skellige though. There are some remote little islands with interesting stuff. Nothing huge, but might be worth it if you like cruising around. gently caress sirens though.

For every really cool thing I come across, it seems like there's one or two generic bandit camps or drowner nests. That's okay by me, though--the core gameplay is still enjoyable enough to see how stylishly I can murder a group of bandits.

The worst ones in Velen are definitely the sunken treasure stuff, so if Skellige is just dozens of those... yeah, I may pass on many.

i typically did the question marks when i was hurting for cash, wanted some experience, or was trying out a new combat build. i know quests give better experience by far but if i was within a few levels of a new set of witcher gear then i always tried to get them on before questing so geralt would look fly in cutscenes.

Outside of Velen, the ?s get really boring. The coastline of Velen actually has kind of an implicit story to it. There's a bunch of wrecked ships and several camps of cannibals. So I just assumed they wrecked there, started eating each other, and never bothered to walk two minutes East. Also some of them carry food on them, which seems like sacrilege for cannibals. They must not be super committed to the lifestyle.

With Velen in general you have the overarching theme of war's actual impact on people, especially civilians.

You can't really treat loot drops as part of the narrative. Otherwise I can't have any sympathy for this peasant who lets his children starve while a Greater Runestone is just sitting in a sack in his hovel.

There's also something with dinosaur / dragon? fossils in the river on the east end of Velen. That always seemed like a cut quest chain.

Toussaint is also well worth exploring thoroughly. Plus it's gorgeous.

First time playing through the game I saved and reloaded to see what happens, and hoestly... that outcome feels much better. More poignant. The people who made that quest and the empress Ciri ending did a really good job creating bittersweet moments.
