:geno: Yes, it's like a lava lamp.

So I've been shopping for new cars for a while, was looking at Elantras, but then I saw the 2021s that are coming down the pipe and drat do they ever look pretty. Really hoping they'll work the panoramic sunroof into it too but that might be asking too much for the compact segment.

Are Jettas the only compact with a bigger than normal sunroof these days?

Oh yeah the Elantra GT does, but it's been discontinued as of this year I think.

Yea the inherent conflict in my opinions there has occurred to me :smith:

The pano roof on the 2020 Sonata is amazing mind you, but I think it's nearly a full foot longer than the 2020 Elantra. But even just the extra wide sunroof on >2019 Jettas (and Golfs?) is really nice.

It is funny to me how many of the people in this thread are rigidly practical in their car buying decisions. I certainly can't fault that at all. Just making an observation.

For most Americans car buying is an almost entirely emotional experience in choosing the most ridiculous and impractical vehicle that they can barely afford.

I love hatch backs and wagons, but I also love these large sedans with a hatch that automakers have had to trick americans with. A7 is my favorite, especially the prior generation:

The existence of fastbacks is the sedan saying the hatchback is superior.

It's also the reason why sedans shouldn't exist at all anymore.

Counterpoint, I think all of those and the associated 4 door coupes that go with them are hideous and I would rather have an actual hatchback/wagon or an actual sedan! Like the modern long 4 door coupe fastbacks all try and pull off the kammback but fail. They ain't no GTOs

A7’s look great in the flesh. Calling them coupes or whatever is dumb still, this form factor isn’t new and we already have a name for it, the liftback.

Unifor (the Canadian union representing auto workers) head Jerry Dias mentioned in an interview that Ford is going to build a new 6.8 L engine at the Windsor engine plant. People are speculating that it may be a destroked version of the 7.3 L V8 and it would be used for the Mustang.

Gentlemen, they are making 3 more 1.5l BRM V16s aka the best sounding car on the planet (this counts as new, right??)

quote:

Every time Formula 1 goes through a rule change which affects the size or type of the its engines, armchair pundits bemoan the fact that they don’t sound as good as the turbos/V12s/V10s/V8s (delete as appropriate).

One thing all can agree on however is that the BRM V16 is the one engine we wish they all sounded like. Well, it’s back, in a faithful recreation of the original P15 single seater 70 years after it first howled in anger. British Racing Motors (BRM) was the country’s first Formula 1 team and, still in existence, will be building three more P15s powered by that fabulously complicated and powerful engine to celebrate its platinum anniversary.

Working from around 20,000 original blueprints and drawings, the task has been entrusted to historic restoration specialists Hall & Hall, founded by former BRM engineer Rick Hall. Utilising chassis numbers assigned in the early ‘50s the three cars will be built to full FIA standards and therefore eligible for historic racing.

Despite each cylinder displacing less than 100cc, the V16 developed close to 600PS (441kW) thanks to an incredible redline for its day of 12,000rpm and its two-stage supercharger. Little wonder it also became the first F1 car to use disc brakes. Juan Manuel Fangio described it as "the most fantastic car I ever drove – an incredible challenge in every way". It was also raced in its day by Stirling Moss, Jose Froilan Gonzalez, Peter Collins and Peter Walker. Sadly the rules for which it was designed, and would potentially have dominated after early reliability problems were ironed out, were abandoned for the 1953 season.
Having started as government-backed consortium, BRM was sold to the Owen family and the first car will be delivered to the son of Sir Alfred Owen on its completion next spring. John Owen was just ten years old when he first heard the car run and this recreation was the brainchild of Sir Alfred’s grandsons Simon, Paul and Nick.

Now 81, John said: “Watching the likes of the Pampas Bull (Gonzalez) and, in particular, Fangio, master the power of the V16 was very special. And the fabulous noise of the engine still rings in my ears 70 years on!

“In a selfish way, I have always dreamed of hearing that sound again but now I’d also love to share that sensation with others. To hear the V16 screaming at full tilt for the first time is something special – something you never forget.”

Despite winning the championship with a home grown V8 and Graham Hill behind the wheel in 1962, it is the V16 for which BRM is possibly most famous. We are already dreaming of hearing that engine echoing around the Goodwood Motor Circuit where the original car won its first race in the hands of Reg Parnell

Regarding hatchback chat, and how people who don’t like them are wrong, new Golf R dropped:

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/amp34532988/2022-vw-golf-r-revealed/

Looks are mediocre IMO, but a modest power bump, more rear bias than previous models, and a manual are all awesome news. I was sure it was going to be DSG only but it seems like manufacturer are realizing that since mostly car nuts are buying affordable fun cars like this, the Z, the BRZ, Miata, Mustang, etc then they might as well serve them. Rejoice!

Looks like a Golf. I think we can give up on VW styling the R with any aggressive cues aside from some minor trim pieces.

VW, employing the 911 school of design on their hatchbacks.

Nice to see the US getting the same power as Europe finally. Hopefully that means they updated the clutch since that was supposed to be the weak point for more power on the outgoing model for manuals.
