that however is not actual evidence that anything happened this election

Best as I can tell, Russia brokered a deal, the state said yes, the military said no, and I think Russia is trying to figure out who is Armenia right now--the military that disagrees with them or the fragile state that might not be there tomorrow.

I'd guess Russia is deciding whether they have to invade Armenia to restore order and they may not have been planning on expanding that way quite yet since they're still occupied west and north.

I figured that Russia would have wanted to be invited into Armenia, not have to invade it. Also this conflict is strange- not usually in the hobby of cheering on Russian vassal states in waiting, but at the same time gently caress Turkey and I’d love to see them come away with a bloody nose.

It's hard to tell who among the GOP is simply cynically indulging Trump for political gain with his base and who earnestly believes the election is being stolen. But both of these are complicit in a profound blow to America's democratic legitimacy and are drastically increasing the likelihood of domestic terrorism.

Best scenario: Biden takes office with millions of Americans believing he actively stole the election and subverted American democracy.

Worst scenario: GOP puts their money where their mouth is and take unprecedented steps to keep Trump in the White House.

This is a time when the "party elders" coming forward in support of the transition would really help, but, at this point, it truly is the party of Trumpism and someone like Dubya publicly calling on the president to concede would get ignored or laughed at.

GOP voters seem pretty united against the Democrats, which is their biggest and most important party platform.

Aside from the never-Trumpers, republicans are much better at setting aside their differences and coming together when they have a common enemy.

I remember a trans youtuber saying that when she said something against the grain of the progressive audience, they were quick to turn on her. But conservatives embraced her and welcomed her to "their side." Ironic that they hate anyone not like them, but they're willing to work with anyone if it helps them get what they want.

the left eating itself isn't a new thing, and if you've been at this for a while you will see that it is one of the most frustrating points. The Republican party has such a narrow focus group that they don't have to worry about all of the big tent politics the Democratic party does. The Democratic party encompasses the entire scope of people who are "not Republicans" from Machin to AOC.

The tea party style circular firing squad tricks seem to simply not work. You can't refine it down to a sharper point through compaction cycles because the membership is too disparate. You just find yourself outside of the tent and outside of power. That's why there's no Democratic version of Fox news or Rush Limbaugh etc etc.

At least that's my thoughts on it.

IIRC, the mandate was a big deal back when it was a penalty for not having insurance, as it basically guaranteed people would rather pick up health insurance rather than take the penalty which would expand the people in the ACA market place.

Then it got reduced to 0$ so it didn't matter anymore.

They did but the argument is that the 2017 congress disagreed. They reduced the mandate to zero but left the rest of the law intact when they could have abolished or reformed the whole thing.

Best description I've seen so far: the ACA needs people to buy into the exchanges it to make it function. Because everyone had Obamaliberal brain, they designed it to have carrots (subsidies) and sticks (individual mandate to buy insurance).

In 2017, the Republican Congress set the individual mandate to $0, effectively eliminating it. The net effect on the ACA was nothing - people still kept signing up (though it's still too expensive).

So the ACA's subsidy carrots let the exchanges work and get enough people. The sticks as part of the mandate turned out to not be needed, or at least aren't needed anymore.

And in a lot of places the penalty was peanuts next to a very expensive but still very bad healthcare plan so gambling and paying a penalty made a lot of sense to young healthy people.
