I just found out about Breaker Morant and I'm losing my poo poo. He's an Australian folk hero, a tough cowboy who broke horses (hence the name) and lived out in the bush, but had also had a sensitive soul and wrote poetry which was published in Australian newspapers. When the call to fight came he joined the British military and fought, only to be executed by his own generals. To this day Australians see him as a hero and still demand his posthumous pardon.

The reason he was executed was because he straight up murdered nine prisoners of war. Nobody disputes that, everyone admits he killed them all in cold blood. The issue is that the Breaker Morant stans insist that there was a general order not to take prisoners of war. So he was just following orders, and therefore did nothing wrong.

The reason he originally became renown is that he was an Australian officer of an irregular unit who was executed by the British.

Australia did not have capital punishment in the military and was one of very few countries at the time who didn't. So when another country went and killed one of their own men, people got a bit upset.

Especially given the existing view that British officers didn't care about the lives of Australian troops and were responsible for the deaths of countless soldiers out of either sheer malice or outright incompetence, one which extended through to WWII which was the last time Australia entrusted their soldiers to British officers.

Morant committed a war crime and should have spent the rest of his life in gaol.

EDIT: Also, fighting in the Boer war should be enough to tell anyone he was a piece of poo poo person, goddamn.

It's possible to be closeted for reasons beyond your control,(ie: survival) this wouldn't lead people to necessarily develop a sense of self hatred you claim are the natural conclusions to hiding their gender identity.

It can just as easily develop into a sense of righteous indignation, for example. Which is probably why a lot of transgender people adopt leftist politics

True enough, but his enemies portrayed him as such (in the Canon, which is of course most definitely not a historical depiction).

depending on the gospel he was religiously and socially anti-establishment, but not politically. you could argue that in an occupied people building resistance can only be done though indirect subversion hence the mixing of the milquetoast and the sword to divide poo poo, or on the other side you could take the slave morality attack against the whole thing and say none of it is subversive since its about building an inner and communal coping psychology to passively submit to injustice

or you can just embrace that its incoherent because its an amalgam from different sects spanning decades and subcommunities and is like trying to reconcile fred hampton with tony robbins, so historical content doesnt matter and you should just strip it for ideological parts when convenient to your current political moment

there wasn't yet a notion of secularism in Jesus's time, so as far as Jesus's politics were radical and anti-establishment, it still had to be wrapped-up in religiosity because you couldn't frame it any other way

and this also dovetails into how Jesus wasn't a socialist, either: the foundation of an alternative economic system based on mutual aid was on an appeal to morality and spiritual (that is, to transcend one's selfishness and egotism), rather than any kind of material analysis

he’s defending the religious establishment of the temple, this isn’t radical and had nothing to do with the occupation of the people he threw out (most of whom were just merchants)
