Yeah they got less heavy, but I think their melodies got way stronger as they got on. However, I know a lot of people never really got into SOAD for that and that's cool. I'll keep blasting Holy Mountains and having a grand time.

Mez/Hyp definitely had its moments (Holy Mountains is indeed one of their best), but it's bogged down by way too much of Daron doing the default "protest music" thing of just yelling slogans ironically. It's super cliché to say a double album would be better cut down to one album, but yeah, probably true here.

I was going to say that I lumped together and wrote off SOAD and Korn because the “vocalist with wacky randomness” was really loving corny but then I realized that kind of applies to Mike Patton too. :(

:eng101: FNM's last album pre-breakup, Album Of The Year, was in 1997. Korn's self-titled was in 1994. Limp Bizkit's first album came out a month after FNM's last. So yeah, there was some overlap between the two eras of "Mike Patton trolling the Red Hot Chilli Peppers" and what we now know as Nu-Metal.

Deftones especially but also FNM and SOAD are extremely good

But what I actually came here to say is that Necrophobic's recent album got me to check out their back catalogue and they rule. Right from their first album.

Metal Vocal Style Question

It’s almost a year old now but I just heard Death Atlas, my first time hearing Cattle Decap, and it rips! I especially like the angry Gollum voice. Some of Arsis’ catalog I really like, as well. James’ voice is a scream, but not quite as good as the chorus of rage Gollums in Cattle Decap. Is there a better word for classifying this type of scream in Metal? Like Halford on Painkiller. The In Flames guy screams but he sounds weak and near breaking, for some reason, though I’ve not heard their whole catalog.

Well there's certainly good albums on it, not many I'd consider actively bad. Having Napalm Death as AOTY and not even having Internal Rot crack your top 40 seems extremely dumb. The lists we'll make in the thread in December will be much better but I'm sure that's far from the worst list a publication will put out in the coming weeks.

Yeah Decibel always has good lists, just weird placement and a bit of favoritism toward legacy acts.

I am sure that is totally not at all informed by having an exclusive color vinyl and a bunch of vinyl bundles on sale. Though those dudes are total homers for ND and Carcass, so I am practicing my shocked face when the full Carcass album gets their AOTY 2021.

At this point I'd say in death metal, that style of vocals is basically exclusive to Cattle Decapitation. Maybe there's some black metal bands that involve something similar. Travis Ryan has said he came up with that style all on his own and so far no one who has attempted to mimic is "doing it right" according to him, and he says he plans to keep the technique a secret for as long as he can get away with it.
