I live in Victoria, BC which is a very quaint, quiet and safe tourist town and the local facebook groups are full of suburb people yelling that its a drug-blighted urban warzone edit: they also really REALLY hate bike lanes. I always go back to the fact that I lived in some really, actually bad parts of Harlem and Brooklyn, where there were like shootings and I even got cut with a knife once, but still the vast majority of my experience was fixing my neighbor's sink and her making me enchiladas or something. Over the course of like 10 years living in some bad areas I had a couple of stressful events but mostly it was people going, "O yeah, if you have a problem, don't ask the super, the White Guy is better and he'll do it for a beer and a joke and we can all eat something afterwards." It'd be 40 minutes of work and then like eating a tamale and playing with their grandkids or something. It was never like Escape from NY or something. It was just poor people that sometimes were desperate but mostly are polite and loving and super appreciative that a dude down the hall had a bunch of tools they might not have.
