it's not super subtle but the final scene in 1917 is our hero walking towards a tree and sitting down by it in the horizon and the music right then is a clear homage to Mansell's The Fountain soundtrack. Same melody, same arrangemen.

The timbre of the instruments is almost exactly the same though

I watched the Martin Short/Dennis Quaid/Meg Ryan family-friendly adventure Innerspace (1987) a bunch as a kid, but I just noticed something very adult that went over my head back then. The villain thug Igoe's right hand is mechanical and throughout the movie he snaps-on various weapons and torture implements in pursuit of our hero. There's a scene where the female villain Dr Canker appears to be having an intimate evening with Igoe. She's in a boudoir dressed in lingerie and eating grapes. Igoe raises his arm as he finishes opening more wine, and we see his snap-on is an electric wine corkscrew. While she watches seductively, he snaps it off and replaces it with a briefly-seen 6-inch smooth chrome rod. He lowers it off-screen, and we hear it start to vibrate. The movies focus on when stuff goes wrong but the universe they exist in certainly isn't dystopian the way Blade Runner's is.

I'm waiting for the Titanic rerelease with the inclusion of the fact the ship set sail made of known flimsy materials and on fire in the coal bunker and white star took a bit of a gamble on that that would have paid off if not for the drat iceberg. Getting the star positions in the night sky right in a theatrical release is probably his biggest motivator but maybe they could also shoehorn in another 90 minutes for Titanic: Blood and Steel about the mistreatment of Irish workers. Honestly this sounds like 3 movies which would need a total recast of fresh young faces, get the Jack/Jaqueline character to be obvious to everyone (not just beard watchers) and we have a go film. By the time this happens ofc the Musk Mars Project will be facing its own hubris trouble and inviting lots of people to do dramatizations but damnit this time the handwriting will be clearly visible.

The effects are mostly practical, but the scenes where the bad guys get shrunk probably looks terrible. And yeah, the chrome dildo scene was great and even a teenage me noticed that one. They must have had someone distract the ratings guy with a cough at that moment.

Watching The King of Comedy for the first time in a good while and there's a ton of weird poo poo I never noticed before. What a great movie. I never realized how really surreal it is In this scene (6:00 if the time stamp doesn't work), there's an extra in the background watching DeNiro and mimicking his hand gestures for whatever reason. Having recently re-watched Breaking Bad in its entirety (had vacation days to use up and travelling is currently not a thing, sue me), while also watching Malcolm in the Middle, I noticed something both shows did that is too specific to be coincidental: In an episode of Malcolm that shows the same story from the points of view of different characters, one key plot point is a power outage caused by a mylar balloon. In BB, Mike deliberately causes a power outage in order to break into a building. He does this by simply letting go of some mylar balloons under the power lines. For anybody wondering why one show would reference the other, Bryan Cranston was the protagonist of both. Yes, he definitely was the main character of Malcolm in the Middle. Shut up.
