Dude was also a walking diplomatic incident with fascist Italy since he kept recounting the time Mussolini didn't give a poo poo when he hit and killed a kid while giving him a car ride. It's a testament to the sheer incompetence of the guys attempting to plot a fascist coup against FDR that they decided to recruit Butler as their Dictator, a man who loudly and truly despised fascism with every particle of his being.

I can't cook much but even I know not to drain rice and add more water. If I come check on it and find some sticking to the pot, I'll add some extra water to see if I can save some more of it but it's never completely draining and rinsing the water bad.

Since politics chat is in full force right now, I just want to recommend Sub.media and Antimidia for Portuguese speakers.

Sub.Media have made hundreds of extremely well made documentaries, interviews and journalistic investigations.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtFPSmyDCdA

Antimidia does much the same but mainly focusing on Brazil.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHlxHW48oLQ

I've been surprised how badly both channels do on youtube, especially Sub.Media which has been going for years and often is the first to break an important event and networks with hundreds of activists around the globe. Turns out youtube has been loving with them for years, striking vids, region blocking etc. They've been so annoyed by this that both groups have collaborated on setting up their own peertube platform to host their videos and the videos of other activists.

https://kolektiva.media/videos/watch/bcb4bbfa-c39d-4fd2-96cf-bc4747d2d9d9

It went public a few months ago and so far not counting a few Bush era vids that did get traction their uploads are on average about half of what they get on youtube, and this is on a small server that has no advertising and very few people in its target audience even know about.

Anyway speaking of breadtube, here's an economist talking about one of Philosophy Tube's older videos

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vfx1kQlmOk

He gets it wrong because while he has some critiques of capitalism, he's still approaching it from a purely liberal, theoretical, and microeconomic perspective. Like he's right that food markets are more competitive than housing markets, but he never establishes any example where homelessness is ended under a market system in the same way that the food market, no matter how efficient, will always result in Late Victorian Holocausts and Grapes_of_Wrath.txt. South Korea might have a more efficient housing market than the United States, but I don't think Parasite is what we want to strive for.

Then like a lot of pure theory economists he falls headfirst into the Henry George trap, an amateur economist who is largely forgotten but is catnip for progressive economists who want technocratic compromise solutions that look intelligent on paper. He's disingenuous in implying that George and Marx agreed about a land tax, as George proposed a land tax as the single panacea for all poverty while Marx proposed a land tax as one means for a dictatorship of the proletariat to expropriate the wealth of the landowning classes (and thus declass them into regular workers).

He seems to think expropriating the property of landlords is unthinkable because they use it as a source of income, but ignores that that unearned income comes directly from the immiseration of those beneath them. If they can't work then it's a problem with how our society treats those who can't work, not with the elimination of landlordism. He opposes the idea of expropriating the property of landlords and eliminating the ability to profit from property ownership (i.e. unearned income) and proposes a number of technocratic reforms, and while those technocratic reforms by aren't bad by themselves they're pointless if they're not undertaken with the goal of expropriating the property of landlords and eliminating the ability to profit from property ownership as Ollie spells out in his video.

Ollie's video is overproduced and oversimplified, but it's fundamentally right, while the increased focus on microeconomic minutia in the response video just serves to obfuscate the sleight of hand being performed.

Yeah I stopped watching the video early on when he said everyone in rich nations can afford apples. Given that food poverty is feature of all economies and seem to be getting much worse even when stock prices go up. It reminded me of uni and the days spent with pure academics and logical hypotheticals.

I wasn't a fan of PT's video either based on the clips, and I can see why an economist would look at it and get insulted. But yeah problems created by a market won't go away until you get rid of the market.

the general danger of the lefty youtube explainer makers is that they do rely too much on video editing and rhetoric and don't go into enough detail on whatever it is that they're on about. a lot of these people put out videos that are 40 minutes to two hours in length, frequently for gags. surely they can put something more robust supports for your argument in there. Without that you wind up creating an area for a wormy little liberal to come in and tut tut about small landowners.

The trouble is with socialist youtubers is that they have to condense down decades of theory and discussion into bite-sized chunks. The formations of a socialist society, the problems that's arise in it, how it would come about and all that jazz have been talked about forever and, from an anarchist point of view, no one person would have all the answers. It's why councils exist. It's like a bunch of experts talking through a problem, if not experts then members of the community. Like the response video did the liberal thing of "ok, well, what about the logistics of it?" and the best response would be "I'm not the one who can answer that but I can give you an idea of how one might be found" and then you'd describe how worker councils and communes have worked forever.

Honestly this is the pitfall of our entire video essay culture at the moment. There's tons of people trying to distill down a history's worth of information into videos that can appeal to wide swaths of people since making more niche / targeted but more technically accurate videos won't support a person. It's okay for cultural critics for movies and games and poo poo (although again, cultivating an audience large enough to live off of can put some hard limits on things) but not so much for more educational or ideological stuff.

tbh there's probably an interesting topic in the transformative nature of fandoms where people take two things they like with no real connection and try to make them work together. You can contrast it with Funko style consumerist bullshit of "HEY LOOK IT'S A T-SHIRT WITH RICK COMING OUT OF THE TARDIS GIVE US THIRTY DOLLARS" and actual fan projects and art it makes and all, the difference between the lazy grimdark 'what if ponies said gently caress and shot each other with mouth guns' and actual attempts to blend the tones and all...could be a neat springboard.

There are a ton of interesting topics regarding fanworks, consumerism and fandoms in general and while I was joking if that is the way poo poo spins I'd be down for it. I feel like, given how prolific streaming is these days, there definitely is room for conversation about how we view fanworks and making entire careers or like sprawling communities based off of properties we don't really own or anything and how the old argument of "fanwork is a fine springboard to start with but you should grow up and do original stuff at some point" isn't really a thing anymore given just how powerful fanfiction and fanart can be and how many popular series have solid rear end roots in fanfiction now.
