He also wrote some of the most trans rights scifi I've ever read. It's basically trans…cendent. I loved the interview where he was asked whether he'd like to live in the Culture, seeing how his books are all about the ultraviolence at its edges, and he was downright incredulous. Hell yes Banks would love to live there.

Culture as whole is downright utopian to the point you can't get anything interesting out of it without that bleeding edge intersectionality with religious bigotry or cultural intolerance from a whole big group. For the trans reader it's just a default that you have as much value as every other person up to and including hijacking a ship to just go gallivanting out in the world. You just have to convince the ship it's a good idea.

I like the The Culture books, but I don't like how the baddies are always monstrously evil to the point of being cartoonish. Eg in one book Special Circumstances is messing with some nasty, authoritarian, bigoted empire (as usual), way late in the book it also surfaces that the nasty empire have a secret brutal snuff film tv channel for the elites to enjoy. Like, we get it, Banks, they're not nice people, and SC is justified in interfering. You don't have to beat us over the head with it by throwing in some unnecessary, disturbing torture porn. I swear he does this at least four separate times.

I'd believe it up until the part where he praises the gorillas. Would've been more realistic if he told the gorillas he would have done a much more tremendous job of fighting the other apes.

I once had an argument with a bloke I used to work about Top Gun. He argued that the film where there is an extended sequence of shirtless sweaty men being caressed by the camera whilst playing volleyball, and then bitchily flirting in the locker rooms afterwards had no homo-erotic content.

Consider Cyrus the Great who freed the Hebrews from the Babylonian Captivity. This same Cyrus the great wouldn't defile conquered places of worship but would instead take their idols to the capital to sit amongst the whole Persian Pantheon.

"demon" is an antiplurality slur adopted by the Roman catholic church to keep the people of Greece from their right to self-determination, likewise "Satan" (from the hebrew-arabic 'shaitan') and the old-english and german "Devil" (dēofol and teufel) all of these concepts represent a periphery population that have historically been oppressed by the elites not only in their own nations but by a distant empire

The Persians were Zoroastrians and slavery is seen as a big sinful no no in that religion and the empire had a whole bunch of restrictions on it while the Greeks were basically slavery central. The only reason the Spartans were able to have a warrior society was because all the actual work was done by a huge underclass of slaves, called Helots, of which there were probably around a thousand of at Thermopylae. The idea that we look at Greek philosophy as as source for a "Western" ideological tradition that values freedom is loving laughable when you learn that a) the whole society of Athens and Sparta et al was run on a massive slave economy and b) women lived in purdah and had no role in public life and no agency in their affairs.
