I think it's the long term debt they have taken on to fund all their different venture. It could be, long term, they pay off but right now? hosed.

Really pisses me off as it shits on a good idea, and sets back all those people who were given a taste of acceptable services.

As another poster said, a lot of reporting is focusing on the council having the mad idea of doing something other than lining of pockets of the private sector.

Reminds me of the Bank of Credit & Commerce International scandal of almost 30 years ago. I think a lot of councils lost a lot of money in that one.

Also Church of England lost a lot (£1.2bn) with the 2008 collapse.

People who do not understand 'loss' should really not be investing other people's money (eg taxpayers etc).

I have to assume you're just being obtuse here, because it's a pretty clear distinction between "fascist" and "fascist apologist". I don't think anyone is disputing that he's motivated by contrarianism and not blood-and-soil ethno nationalism. That combination of contrarianism and stubbornness can easily lead to a buffer overflow where you end up with Chomsky and Cambodia. Or like, Christopher Hitchens' entire career (though to me he's a more sui generis dickhead). And the whole thing is turbocharged by the attention economy, survival-of-the-hottest-takes media landscape that the left gets penned into.

But his takes, they're bad.

Of course some would argue that it already is.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/nov/12/post-brexit-lorry-queues-could-make-kent-toilet-of-england

quote:

Kent could become the “toilet of England” in less than eight weeks unless dedicated loos are provided for thousands of lorry drivers who could be held up in the county for hours by post-Brexit border checks, campaigners have warned.

They say Kent’s main roads and laybys are already littered with bottles of urine and bags of excrement and the problem could become much worse after 31 December.

“It has got the potential to be disgusting,” said Phil Silkstone, a regional official for Unite, which represents many lorry drivers.

Mike Sole, a Liberal Democrat councillor in Canterbury who has been campaigningon the issue of human waste being discarded in laybys near the A2 motorway, said: “I’m worried Kent is becoming the toilet of England, not the garden of England. And we’re all braced for it getting much much worse.”

The government has promised drivers there will be portable toilets if an anticipated 7,000 lorries are held up by new checks and controls in Kent’s ports if there is no Brexit trade deal.

But Unite says these will not be enough to prevent fouling of Kent’s hedgerows on a scale that will horrify local residents. “If all the government does is supply a few Portaloos then drivers are likely to take the other options – and that’s use the bushes,” Silkstone said.

He warned that the biggest problem would be around four lorry parks currently being built in Kent to cope with the anticipated increase in vehicles held at Channel ports.

Silkstone said: “The main concern is the welfare of our drivers, but also the welfare of local residents. It won’t be nice having thousands of lorry drivers potentially using the bushes around lorry parks. All we need is proper toilet and washing facilities. The time to start installing them isn’t in January, it’s now.”

He added: “It is not a threat from us, but inevitably if drivers are forced to use bushes and parkways, the environment will be damaged in those areas. I’m hoping the government will listen.”

On Wednesday, Silkstone wrote to every MP in Kent and hundreds of councillors across the south-east of England warning of the problem ahead. He said: “Presently all we are aware of is that portable toilets will be used which I am sure you will agree is not acceptable for drivers under normal circumstances but even more so in the middle of this Covid-19 crisis, this brings potential health risks to all concerned including local residents.”

Sole, one of the recipients of the letter, described the fouling at a layby in his ward east of Canterbury. “You’ve got bottles of urine just thrown everywhere. And also toilet paper and all others sorts of mess that people on footpaths are going to find. Whilst there is annoyance and disgust at the behaviour there is also sympathy with drivers. It is imperative that the government assist in providing adequate facilities for lorry drivers who do such an important role in keeping the economy going.”

A spokeswoman for the Department for Transport referred questions to Highways England. A spokeswoman for Highways England said: “We are working with a number of partners to put contingency plans in place.” But she referred questions about toilet facilities for lorry drivers back to the department and to Kent county council.

A Kent county council spokesman said waste clearance was the responsibility of district and borough councils.

He added: “Local partners are working together to plan a traffic management system that will best fit with sites available from the government for freight parking and checks. As part of that ongoing work, government has ensured there will be toilet provision for drivers at those sites around Kent.”

the "terrible idea to build affordable houses" is an odd way of putting it. Brick by Brick have completed something like 3 homes in its existence.
that money's been spunked up against the wall, and account for something like half of their budget shortfall.

unless I'm mixing Croydon up with other councils, they've borrowed heavily from the Public Works Loan Board from the Treasury and immediately loaned that money on to their pet projects. it has been seen as an easy way to make up for cuts to council funding. council gets income from buying up office blocks, shopping centres, hotels, etc instead (usually not even properties in their own area).
those loans have a very low interest rate, but by law are supposed to be used for investment not speculation. but Treasury seems to have turned a bit of a blind eye to that since Osbourne was chancellor.
Croydon might be the first since Northamptonshire a few years ago but a lot of other councils are staring down the same barrel of unpayble debts for bad investments.
covid's been the shock to push them over the edge, with the combination of massive drop in income from their investments at the same as having to additional costs and people alive.

NI folks? Is there any way forward for the executive? It seems incredibly apparent that the DUP are running out the clock with a view to leaving "lockdown" tomorrow by default. 4 weeks was never enough time and there are a large amount of people clean not doing their bit.

I can only guess that if we all go back to normal we'll be looking at another lockdown mid december?

The DUP has recently said that Covid is mainly in catholic areas, I think this is still in the mindset with them wanting to open up everything atm.
There still is a 'one upping' mentality on both sides, if they can get a dig in the other side they will do it.
Even if it means it affects them too.

From what I've heard in chatter the CMOs briefing was enough to spook some of the MLAs in the DUP to worry that if they just let the regulations lapse entirely they would shoulder the entrity of the blame if tighter family gathering restrictions have to be brought in over Christmas, the Dodds proposal of "everything but the devil's buttermilk" being an attempt to find a mid way point between end the lockdown now and also we can't lose more votes to alliance poles in the party.

As a border dweller lifting our restrictions before Ireland leaves level 4 is real loving stupid, especially considering the chat down south is that it's gonna be level 3 all December with pubs closed so we're gonna be swamped with people looking for a pint
