transphobic reaction has managed to take root in liberal circles in the UK in a way it hasn't in the US, maybe partly due to our extraordinarily closed and incestuous (and right-wing, the NYT is bad but our equivalent is literally owned by Murdoch) press subculture meaning people who would otherwise have drifted with the times instead dug heels in to defend their bigoted colleagues from criticism plus, the corbyn era hypercharged the extent to which opposing the left is seen as a mark of good sense and personal decency among those whose careers and self-conception it threatened. trans rights are just in the bag with the rest of strong left views as a sign of being a repulsive commie freak that good liberals need to prove their bona fides by resisting. the british 'public sphere' is actually more narrow and reactionary than the american atm, imo this is all within liberalism of course, but our left is inevitably influenced by where the general discourse is

i went to a candidate forum for DSA in like uhh 2018? in Sacramento and I dont really remember much about it but one of the guys running for I think state assembly or city council or something was this weird anti vaxxer guy, like he thought that was the #1 issue for not only us but all Californians and I remember quoting him out ot context for like a year afterward and always getting laughs. So big shout out to that guy

sj-y is correct. fetterman endorsed the incumbent state rep Paul Costa who was being challenged by Pittsburgh DSA-backed summer lee. Essentially as a result of this they weren’t big fans of his. there was a town hall where some dsa member used that endorsement to say that fetterman was weak on abortion rights which doesn’t really hold up under scrutiny
