As much as I am completely unexcited by the segment, I absolutely 100% understand why most of the buying public would choose the lifted, faux-ruggedized hatchback option over the vanilla hatchback, and why that segment is selling like gangbusters while "normal" cars slowly bleed out. I love me a good hatchback, but the bit of extra ground clearance and available AWD (if if it's stinky part-time front-biased AWD) gives them just that much more utility and versatility -- even if it is in no way an off-road vehicle. Plus in some cases like the Mazda CX-30, the CUV-ized version has considerably more cargo space than the 3 Hatch. Yes, part of it is image and that part is dumb, but there's some legitimate improvements/trade-offs to be had. Also, subjectively, a lot of normies like the more vertical, upright seating position. For folks that just need an every day driver and don't go carve any canyons I can't say I entirely blame them. These days even driving around the city on nominally paved roads is a pain in the rear end with less than 6 inches of ground clearance. Pot holes and giant cracks, uneven slabs, crumbling driveways, stupidly tall parking stones, etc, etc. Wish we still lived in a first-world country that invests in its infrastructure but alas. My brother in law just bought a BMW X3, and he said "oh I'll probably never need the four wheel drive but I guess it's nice to have". To me, the best justification for getting a 4WD car, no matter how pissy the 4WD is, is taking it to the snow. The snow roads here are generally "you must either have chains or 4WD to proceed past this point", and let me assure you dear reader if you've never put on a set of snow chains, you never want to. They don't differentiate between what sort of 4WD you have, either, so there's 70-series Landcruisers sitting next to Hyundai Konas. And before you ask, no, Australians don't understand that a 2WD car with snow tires on will do better than basically any car with regular tires and 4WD with a normal driver behind the wheel.

Most locals do use snow tires in the winter (or, as you said, appropriate ATs; we keep ko2s on our truck year round). I see a good number of cars just running snow tires year round, in fact. I can’t blame non-locals for sticking with all seasons, though. In my experience caltrans will just entirely close the highway before conditions get so bad that a competent driver can’t manage fine with all seasons. I never bothered swapping tires before I moved here full time. All this didn’t stop some idiot from passing me at 35 in a 45 on an iced over road yesterday morning, or the next idiot from tailgating me the rest of the way. Other locals, too, most likely.

After years of AWD with all seasons, I've switched my rides to all seasons with the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) which do seem to do better in the snow than my previous all seasons (Michelin Defender).
