Mega Comrade posted:Oh but it is. You might know that in many European countries, getting a driver's license is quite difficult. In the Netherlands it usually takes like 40 hours (one or two hours a week, so the better part of a year) of driving lessons and then a rather though examination where they can fail you on extremely minor mistakes. This is one reason why there's less car accidents here than in America. Another reason is that American road design is often more unsafe and doesn't have stuff like slow-down measures to prevent speeding. Anyway, I don't know about other countries but in NL you can choose to take your lessons and exam in an automatic. It's of course a bit easier since you don't have to learn how to use a stick. Not many people do this though, because it'll get you a special notice on your driving license that says it's illegal to drive in a manual, and since most cars here are manual that severely limits your options. I guess this option is useful for people who literally cannot drive a manual because they're missing an arm or something.

This is one reason why there's less car accidents here than in America. Another reason is that American road design is often more unsafe and doesn't have stuff like slow-down measures to prevent speeding. In Spain is not only hard but expensive (that doesn't mean we don't have bad drivers, we have a lot but because they choose to be bad). You have to attend classes and pass an exam then 40 hours of driving lessons. First you pay about 200-300€ to be able to attend classes and the first 10h then you have to pay for the rest of driving lessons. If you do everything at first try you will pay about 500-600€ for your license, more lessons or failing one of the tests means paying more to try. Then you learn with a manual car because about 96% of cars in Spain are manual and because our laws mention that you have to do the driving test in a manual so you end getting a manual because as mentioned before, automatic is more expensive, they ask you for more money to repair them, insurance is (not much really) a bit higher and all that poo poo. Meme tax:

Mega Comrade posted:Oh but it is. I’ve seen someone who’s been driving an automatic for 20 years turn on his car while on the phone, angrily having a business call, forget the car was in reverse and release the brake, driving straight into the ac unit behind him. When the car can do things without you actually having to do anything, you’re going to get more accidents. At least in a manual the car won’t move unless you explicitly engage a gear and explicitly re-engage the clutch.

Does your car have a clutch that doesn't automatically pop back up to put the car in gear or something? The only difference between doing that in an auto and a manual is that you have to relax 2 legs instead of one.

Our capitalistic government has convinced people that public transportation is communism, and my daily commute (when we weren't in lockdown) was 50 miles each way. Of course your obvious reply is that Americans aren't normal people in the 21st century, and that's fair. rydiafan has a new favorite as of 17:23 on Nov 15, 2020 |

SneezeOfTheDecade posted:I liked my manual transmission until I had to teach someone how to drive on it. I did the dickhead manual "hurr slushbox" thing until once, I stopped by the lemon lot on base (the spot where people have their cars up for sale). There were a few neat cars there, and I was looking at a Miata when a guy walked up and asked about mine that I had gotten out of. We shot the breeze for a minute before he asked me if it was an automatic, and of course I laughed. He said the Miata on sale was his, and that he loved the car, but he just had left knee surgery and could not work a clutch anymore. So he was selling it and looking for an automatic Miata (I think like 10% of them are autos). Felt like such a genuine dick for laughing that it broke me of that poo poo forever.
