Isn't that weirdo "golfing as a hobby" level of financially comfortable? A 1000x microscope may be obtained for less than 100 dollars and opens up a wide and exciting world of microorganisms to witness. Or does he think bacteria and other pathogens are harmless red herrings or something

a bunch of people based in the UK I followed who were decent about examining imperialism all went off the COVID deep end. I assume there's something in the water. https://twitter.com/IsaBlumi/status/1328394337189830660?s=20 https://twitter.com/EvaKBartlett/status/1324726627008499719?s=20 https://twitter.com/VanessaBeeley/status/1323818521000841218?s=20 https://twitter.com/OffGuardian0/status/1326566602972786689?s=20 I know some of them had wrong opinions before, but none were quite this bad. I think some of them still have a sort of exceptionalism when thinking about Western states. People have to believe this COVID pandemic had to have been planned, because it's impossible to comprehend the state in a place like the UK or US utterly failing so utterly in its response. I don't think the leadership in either country is that upset about the unnecessary death, but it definitely makes their jobs a bit harder.

GunnerJ posted:What was the actual deal with Lysenko? remember the historical context of the russian revolution at this point, genetics was strongly linked to eugenics and fascism and its interpretations were considered a bougie science for justifying scientific racism. We are talking about people seriously obsessed with being cucked and sterilizing "undesireables" lysenko followed a different Lamarkian theory where traits earned during one's life (say you work out a lot and get huge arms) get passed on to your offspring He became famous for contributing to agrarian science by chilling seeds and believed that if you chill seeds you can passed the vernalized traits to new harvests and grow them in inhospitable soil this kind of thinking meshed really well with dialectical materialism so it was promoted against reactionary eugenicists. The difference between a geneticist and eugenicist was small at that time so unfortunately they fell prey to ideological battles in universities with some being prosecuted so the crops didn't behave in the way they should and Lysenko was discredited until recently when scientists have highlighted the possible inheritance of traits acquired by the previous generation that do behave in a lamarkian way but its disputed and didn't help those crops
