they're sewer tunnels. you can just about stand up in them, two people can walk side by side.

nah they're gonna be 11 foot, which (i'm sure purely coincidentally) is the loading gauge of the smallest commonly-available metro trains so if it all goes to poo poo they can just buy a couple of 1967 stock london underground trains from the scrap dealers.

(fun fact, the 1967 tube stock was fully self-driving in... 1967)

the fact that those smaller tunnels don't need as much reinforcement as a "proper" subway size is like the whole reason for the boring company, right? so elon could just buy these existing 11 foot machines and "innovate"

well, that and "what if we ran the tbm out of spec?". idk if they've ever actually done that, i assume not because they also plan to keep using it, but that was part of their early flim flam about reduce construction costs/time

sort of - it's just the same exact equation greathead did before digging the city and south london railway.

a 15-foot tunnel needs 47 square feet of lining per foot, a 10-foot tunnel only 31, but more importantly you need to remove 176 cubic feet of material for the former but only 78 for the latter, so you just need to work out what the smallest possible tunnel you can comfortably fit a standard-gauge rail line down - the number he came up with, 11 feet 8 inches, is still pretty much the standard across the deep-level tube lines and like I say *purely coincidentally* is the size the boring company have gone for, i'm sure not because there's loads of tbms already around that size because of a calculation made 130 years ago.

Maybe they're going to just mass cast Transmute Mud-to-Clay before building the tunnels so it can self-support?

Screams. Oh god, the screams. They echoed at the ends of the Muskloop, choking on the steam and heat that 100 combusting lithium caskets produced. The security stream was like watching War ride down an endless parade of brimstone as flame-laden wheels ticked dutifully along and flash-fried skeletons sat at attention, hands fused to molten wheels..

The fires burned for months. Their heat melted the steel beams that formed the underground ligaments of the strip.

One by one, the hotels and casinos fell. First, a tell-tale sag. Then some split asunder, tumbling their occupants and contents into the hell below. The maw widened, ever slowly, with white hot fire that lit the night like a beacon.

It snowed for the first time last week. . . But no. Not snow.

Elon tweeted again today, from a remote location. "Vegas 420 smoke everyday, lol. FSD rolling out soon".

Also, I'm hesitant to blame the tweet below on Tesla versus the driver hitting the wrong pedal, but I could see both being equally likely. Especially the one where the guy says he always one foot drives, seems unlikely he just mashed the accelerator. Perhaps the average driver doesn't need crazy acceleration from a stop.

By "deep-level tube lines" he means the ones in the London Underground. In that system you have two different types of lines (well three these days if you want to talk about what used to be the separately run overground local rail network), the sub-surface lines, e.g. the Metropolitan line, and the deep-level lines, e.g. the Central line. They use totally different rolling stock, have different tunnel specs, etc.

there's a few other metros around the world that use the deep level tube specs more-or-less, but it's realistically actually a little bit too small if i'm honest. the curved walls make it uncomfortable at peak times (particularly in the time of plague, the fact it tends to force your face closer in to other people than if you're standing up straight is not-great) - but people are used to it now and the maths still work out in terms of saving money, so they keep using it. still a shitload better than a bunch of teslas though.

actually, back of the envelope, a single 97-stock train, running a 10-minute frequency, has 50% more capacity than elon's Very Clever Idea *even if you only use the seats*. allow standing and you only need to run it once an hour to beat the lithium fire pyrotechnic display team.

Whatever is the dumbest, least dignified thing possible is what ends up happening.

So, he loses his balls to COVID and then we watch him grow even more unhinged for years, somehow managing to get more people on board with his madness, until we realize the reason it happened in the trials after the Musk Reign, if history is anything to go by.

The people on the Mars colony starve because the food budget is calculated assuming a successful harvest every time, and the crops are a monoculture and they brought a plant disease not quite able to destroy the harvest with them, but we're already a few years into the second Musk term, and he's got plenty of volunteers for the second station. The cars keep spontaneously disassembling at speed, but it turns to be by sabotage in the camps by the people who aren't committed to Musk's plan to save the earth with consumerism. They work at the camps for a better future, and thus should be proud of their contribution, but they decide to oppose climate justice at any cost, and thus harsher measures are unfortunately needed. Musk's making big moves towards an unified energy infrastructure with batteries to solve load instability from his solar panel empire, opposed by people who defend fossil fuels with such absurdities as "green colonialism", and if humanity should need a nation's resources, they will take them, and everyone will benefit because it'll solve climate change. Which has only been accelerating, causing massive food riots and refugee swarms, and necessitated tough choices so the refugees don't cause a cascading failure in the regions they escape to.

Fifteen years later, at the 2045 New Zurich trials, we start digging into Musk's medical records to really realize why this happened, and find out he was rendered infertile by a disease he didn't take seriously.

The real future will be shittier for some reason that now seems incomprehensible, if this year's anything to go by.
