No because U.S. bats probably have their own viruses that are as bad or worse, waiting to jump to some unwary soul.

From southern Germany, to central Iowa, north Alabama, and central Florida, I've always been told to leave bats the gently caress alone because of risk from disease both ways. Sounded like good advice then, doubly so now.

In the UK they seem to have been doing a bit of both, but loads of companies are still going to go bust because they have expenses which won't be covered and there's only so much debt they can accrue before they just explode.

One guy on the radio was saying that he's had of some nightclub chain and they are turbo-hosed as the gov has a load of help for companies but they don't qualify for any of it, and they're already 17mil in debt with the company up for sale and no income since March. Said that if they were given a grant to stay afloat then the gov would get approx a 300% return on it in a year or two as they pay a crapload of tax on booze sales, but as it is they'll get nothing as they won't exist.

There will always be someone else ready to occupy that particular niche once it is a viable business model again. The government hasn't lost out on anything.

Sure. The execution has been terrible, I don’t disagree. My point was mainly in response to (and I should have quoted it as such) the person who said it was done because direct handouts to those in need are too much of a socialist plot for the US to do. It’s not, there’s genuine benefits to stimulus like this that lead to better outcomes, even if in this case the execution was terrible and lead to cases.

Historically monopolies are only broken up by strong government or violent extrajudicial action.

I would say I'm surprised that it's not a larger proportion, bit given that a lot of people went out partying in the last day before our current lockdown I suspect that has had more effect on the recent numbers... Not helped by Wetherspoons discounting beer to 99p a pint then : https://metro.co.uk/2020/11/02/wetherspoons-selling-99p-pints-to-get-rid-of-stock-before-lockdown-13519287/

It's a good idea although probably not while there's still community transmission going on.

How is lifting lockdown justified?

I think the information initially provided to contact tracers made it appear as if there was some super contagious strain that had emerged and they needed to lock the gently caress down ASAP to stop it spreading.

Now they know the dude wasn't in the shop just to order a couple of pizzas and was actually in there for hours at a time they changed their assumptions about the virus and believe they can keep on top of the cluster with a less severe lockdown.

A few hours later, the death toll for that day was announced at 1,956. 2,000/day might come a bit sooner than Christmas.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

Update: yesterday's death toll for the US was 2,065, and that's with several states not reporting so it might get updated to an even higher number. Reported infections was a tad under 200k but will probably beat that today.

I’m a critical care (ICU) doctor in the US. I’ve seen a lot of folks die of this disease. Round 2 (going on now as we didn’t have a middle peak where I’m at) we’ve had much more success- probably because the stupid loving ER isn’t intubating everyone like moron robots before trying high flow oxygen and non-invasive ventilation like we have done for years with bad viral pneumonia. Because of over intubation, we would run out of room, pts were left in hallways falling into shock due to oversedation. Eventually they would get up to us in the ICU in complete multi organ failure where they would promptly code out and die alone and I’d have to call their families.

Sorry bit of PTSD....

Anyway if we keep our heads about us and do things the way they should be done knowing that covid isn’t some magic disease, the in-hospital mortality rate should (and has!) drop due to lack of panic and stupidity (that I took part in) during the first phase of this crisis. That of course all goes out the window if the hospitalization rate gets further out of control and people end up in hallways. When you hear about running out of hospital beds, increased death rates are about 5 days behind.
