You've got to admit, you are kind of implausible

A giant B.A.T. isn't really out of place in the G.I. Joe universe.

They should've done this one from the cartoon:

This is scanned from the Eternia playset instructions. It is a visual list of the parts included in the original box. I have been using it as a guide as I piece together the set.

There's a guy on Ebay with reproductions but I'm waiting for the purchased parts to arrive before I buy them. The guy I bought this set from had most of the original labels in a baggie and I could probably use them. We'll see.

I'm sorry, but G.I. Joe collectors are a real bummer. I had to leave a G.I. Joe Classified Facebook group because they weren't just negative, they were bragging about being dicks to Target employees, threatening them, trying to get them fired. And one rando started threatening me from out of nowhere, sending me private messages saying he was willing to travel to meet me somewhere to fight. I think I had said something about Airtight (the Joe who was the hostile environment specialist) being prepared for COVID because he had a helmet with a built-in mask, and that was all it took.

Hisstank seems to hate everything. Is it just me, or do a lot of hardcore Joe collectors swing conservative/right-wing, too? Maybe they took all the military propaganda to heart.

I don't collect the Retro figures, but Duke's "O-face" was definitely a choice.

It seems like thats the case. They also seem to think gi joe is just for them, like worse than even the most neckbeardy star wars guy. They dogpiled the one guy who basically went "maybe we are the problem."

I sometimes think it would be nice to have an irl gi joe collector friend but then I think better of it.

Yeah the Mythic Legions Cabal is pretty chill. It’s all just people sharing toy photography, custom figures, and congratulating each other on their toy hauls.

It’s holding on to childish tendencies but instead of keeping it limited too buying toys its everything.

Like drat I read a post on a forum for expensive collectibles and an adult went off about how they like this toy having giant boobs and everyone called him a creep and they whined about people being woke.

By and large the worst ones never paid attention to much aside from the cartoon and the toys which is like the most... 80s-centric part of the line. Larry Hama did a lot in the boundaries of the comic and was informed by the fact he, you know, had been to war. I know Hisstank ran off two GI Joe comic writers in Aubrey Sitterson (who admittedly has a few issues of his own) and Paul Allor for the crime of putting a queer main character in his Joe book. (Allor's Joe book is really good and people should read it.) I think Hama made his new Snake Eyes a Latina just to mess with them sometimes.

They are absolutely the Hot Wheel Guys of the action figure set like Fuzz says.

I've read every G.I. Joe issue Hama wrote for Marvel and the vast majority he has written for IDW. It was definitely less "ooh-rah" jingoistic than the cartoon, with real consequences to violence and war. The stories and characterizations are A LOT better, too.

All I've read by Allor is that one issue about Scarlett's PTSD (that's his series, right?), and all I've read by Sitterson is his Comic Book History of Pro Wrestling, which I really enjoyed because I got back into wrestling this year. Who is the queer character?

But the best G.I. Joe story ever, in any medium, is Cobra: The Last Laugh, by Christos Gage, Mike Costa, and Antonio Fuso. It's brilliant, and anyone with any enduring fandom, nostalgic love, or passing interest for G.I. Joe should read it. Even if you don't, it's a drat good comic in its own right. The slightly oversized hardcover sells for $50 and has been out of print for years, but a $30 TPB is finally due out next month, and hopefully it isn't delayed any further. I'll finally own my own copy of it soon.

The GI Joe comics have always been vastly superior to the cartoon, outside of Shipwreck. But that is also the nature of the medium which the cartoon had to fit the US standards of the day. I wish all the time that Hasbro would just take the comic and do a cartoon based on them.

Hell I wish the movies were heavily based off the comics. Honestly I am utterly amazed both the GI Joe and Transformers movies aren’t just set in the early 80s and run with it. The Bumblebee movie did that to some success. Seems like a easy to to avoid some messy modern day issues as well.

As for a lot of adult collector scenes being full of awful people, it isn’t surprising. To be heavily involved in a niche collecting market like even something like GI Joe or MOTU means you already have a little something wrong with yourself.

Most collectors often go for what they like or in vintage stuff things that they had in their youth or wanted back then. Most people get them or a reasonable version of it and are done. Those that get heavily involved and/or feel the need to have it all are not normal people.

Like I know a guy who was making vintage GI Joe videos that had to stop because people in that scene were harassing him because he tried to be positive about everything he did a review on, even the bad 90s stuff because he felt like it was a way to be more positive in a fandom that is very negative.

He stopped doing videos at all because of now bad and targeted the harassment is.

My favorite thing about the comic was back when I was younger, the marvel comic blew up the entire line of some new fancy chrome toyline on a random page in a book, during a random attack on a boat. Like one shot, with a missile, and they all went poof.

Between Cobra Commander being all alcoholic ex car salesman, and then wiping out a toyline, it was amazing.

BattleForce 2000! Hasbro must have foisted them on Hama, because he killed off six of the seven guys and destroyed all their ridiculous futuristic vehicles at once. He had a soft spot for Dodger, who continued to appear sporadically. But that was the same storyline where a S.A.W. Viper also murdered Breaker, Doc, Quick Kick, Crazylegs, Thunder, Crankcase, and Heavy Metal based on a miscommunication. Cobra Commander had told Tomax and Xamot to "take care of" the captive Joes, meaning to get them fed and ready for a prisoner exchange, and the twins took it the wrong way, telling the sadistic S.A.W. Viper to "take care of them."

I think hes referencing the latest joe book that started last year. It is set where cobra won and it follows a new gi joe recruit who happens to be gay (bi?). Its actually pretty good once you get past the first couple set up the universe issues. It also kills duke in like the first 2 pages of issue one which is how the new character is brought in. It caused much consternation.

Yeah, Tiger is our POV character and also his boyfriend disappeared due to Cobra-related shenanigans. Allor has also messed with a couple of old standby's ethnicities, like Flint is now Frontier and was originally born in Pakistan. Or rather I guess he could still introduce Flint but Frontier has all of his markers up to and being involved with Lady Jaye. Tiger himself is a Cambodian immigrant so naturally Hisstank shrieks 'political!' while recoiling like somebody brandished a cross at them.
