I think a 24 year old could do that.

Also Oswald was a Marine and was noted to be an excellent marksman. The one thing he was good at his whole life.

And aren't the distances for qualification much further?

Yes, I've no idea what the Marines did during his era but the Army today goes out to 300m and the USMC I think is 500m? Less than 100 with a scope should in theory not be difficult.

USMC has been shooting out to 500 yards for a long rear end time, I'm fairly certain it was that way since the springfield was introduced. The shortest range is 200. And it was always with irons, not even a scope, although that might have changed lately i'm not sure.

I barely made expert my entire 8 years and am pretty confident I can hit JFK's ear lobe at less than 100m.

The USMC teaches marksmanship and has a separate combat qualification. The Army teaches shooting pop-ups and that's it. Our marksmanship training is for "combat effectiveness" and is designed to go no further than 300m and to only hit minute-of-silhouette. Most soldiers have no idea how to shoot because they've never been taught real marksmanship fundamentals and very few have ever gotten to practice what fundamentals they do know on paper on a KD range to get feedback on their techniques.
|
# ? Nov 23, 2020 19:45 |

Army is pretty variable. Pop-up 50-300 meter ranges are the basic standard. Depending on unit, that may be the bare minimum before moving to advanced marksmanship, moving live fires, stress fire, shoot houses, etc. But the basic pop-up also might be literally the only marksmanship you do all year.

mlmp08 posted:Army is pretty variable. In garrison we did nothing but the qual range once a year. In country we did a lot more marksmanship stuff. Like “vehicles are down for a day? We’re doing reflexive fire all day.” Or shooting from the turret while moving or whatever.

My reserve time (93-96) we went to the range once.

First deployment did basic qual, EST scenarios, then live reflexive fires, then vehicle mounted, then vehicle mounted with halts to dismount and bounding live fire. Most recent past deployment: “If you can make it, there happens to be a qual range before you deploy.”

My USAF pre deployment training was 45 (I think) rounds through an M9. I only vaguely remember it because the Intel LT in the lane next to me failed because she didn’t load all her mags and failed hard. One of the security forces dudes running the course just re-shot her qual for her because she broke down crying once they figured out her issue.

88 yards is so close that (properly zeroed) you can realistically ignore all variables and simply put crosshair on target. 6.5mm is a very fast, flat shooting round.

PookBear posted:88 yards is so close that (properly zeroed) you can realistically ignore all variables and simply put crosshair on target. Using some old load data, it looks like the muzzle velocity of that round and that rifle was about 2000fps. Which means flight time for 88 yards is about .14 seconds, and if he zeroed at 100 yards the bullet drop would have been 1/4" high. .14 seconds gives you about 27 inches of movement if the target is moving at 11mph, so it's not nothing. But it's not a wild lead either, especially on a target moving away from you.
