I don't know if I'll regret sharing this, but at least it's not drama? My home office, which I redecorated this year from a shade of battleship grey. An interesting thing to note is that all these images were taken within five minutes of each other. The shade of pink is the same on each wall. Light and shadow really play such a huge part in how we perceive a colour. The cream wall with the french doors was painted cream rather than pink because when there is strong light coming through the doors, the wall would have appeared very dark and oppressive. My intention with the room was to explore maximalism without eclecticism. I don't think I quite made it to maximalist, it's just that we're so used to minimalist decor that anything beyond that looks like a lot.

The art is mostly by local artists, although the cassowary is a print by an artist in Seattle that was a fundraiser for Australian bushfire recovery efforts. I need to get the window replaced - it's old and in bad shape - and when that's done I'm going to make a roman blind in the same fabric as the closet curtain. The room functions both as my home office and as a transition point between indoor space and outdoor space; all the rugs are sturdy outdoor textiles, we store gardening supplies in the closet, and there is space near the doors to provide a nursery for seedlings that need to be hardened up before going outside.

I think the plant corner will be great when some of those plants are taller, although I'm browsing on a phone so I haven't got the size to see if those things are even real plants. Maybe get a plant that falls rather than rising, though, and hang it high up.

Oh for sure, some of those plants are going to get taller. There's a dicksonia antarctica tucked in there that grows to 10ft outside, but usually only 6 ft inside, a standard-issue monstera deliciosa that is but a baby yet, give it a few years and it'll live up to its name, and an arabica coffee plant that's tripled in size since July when I got it, and will make a nice shrubby tree size. There's no way that everything stays as compact in that corner as it is now, but I'm not panicking about where it all goes until it does the growing. I'm just really glad I didn't give into my basest instincts and get a ruffled fan palm. (Yet.)

This is neat I like this. The color is way too bright for me personally to exist in (blue and green and yellow for me plzz.....MAYBE coral) but if you get a million more paintings on the wall it won't be quite so promininent.

I would be physically unable to use those stairs. I have a phobia (?) of riserless stairs, elevated areas without handrails, and transparent floors, so a set of clear acrylic riserless stairs without handrails is basically tailor made to paralyze me.

Naw, traditional Finnish saunas are almost always built from wood. It's an old-fashioned storage cellar! The earth regulates the temperature inside so your foodstuffs etc. stay at a reasonably cool temperature year-round, not too warm in summer, not too cold in winter :eng101:

Posted in the crappy construction thread, but it seems it suits this thread better:

I did a random walkthrough of a finnish real estate site and figured I'd post some of the results, to give some ideas of finnish houe styles. It's mostly anglo-saxon / NA stuff in this thread otherwise. I won't bother inline all pictures, you can just click on the link and look through the pics. I'll just post one pic per house.

First result, a house built in 2016:

https://www.etuovi.com/kohde/9561650?haku=M1571763156
This is a modern log house, I wonder if those are laminated timbers or proper real timber. The laminated stuff doesn't have the longevity of real timber. That house size is pretty average for Finland. This place has it's own bog.

https://www.etuovi.com/kohde/9652975?haku=M1571763156
Now here's a cheaper, older house, looks like it could be from the 1970s and yeah the page says 1975, and the interior looks like it's mostly original. Despite the brick facade I am certain the house has a wooden frame inside and the brick is a facade only. These dark and sometimes yellow brick houses are pretty common here and to me has that dated 70s feel over them. I've seen some though with a really nice color for brick that still looks nice.

Now I thought this house was late 70s to mid 1980s but it was actually built in 1990..

https://www.etuovi.com/kohde/20059081?haku=M1571763156
It's basically the same as above though in construction, but more modern feeling. The interior has a definite 1990s feel to me.

Something different, a house from 1899.

https://www.etuovi.com/kohde/p87688?haku=M1571770414
Looks to be an old time farmers place, I am certain this is a proper nordic log house. And like most log houses, the log frame is covered up by a facade and possibly insulation (either proper insulation or just teetrex or similar boards to help protect against the wind). I personally like this style of construction, additional insulation is easy to add to the outside and a timber frame house can last centuries. Risks with these houses are modern idiot owners removing interior walls for an open solution and compromising the structural integrity of the house and turning them into death traps. I have a friend who managed to save a house like this but he was scared to go in and put up the supports and told the owners to not live in the house until it was repaired.

In one picture I can see a kakelugn, and not the superior finnish pönttöuuni but a swedish style kakelugn, which is fancier and more upscale, but not as durable and economical as the finnish sheet metal covered modern version. So I think this was the house of a big time farmer with money. And the people who live there have kept the interior modernized.

EDIT: Oh yeah that roof is definitely new. I wonder if they replaced a proper brick roof or if it had an original sheet metal roof that was just worn out.

I dunno if anyone finds this interesting or not, but a break from the same old mcmansions could be nice I thought.

I really like #1 and #4, thank you for posting this. Please keep up if you have time.
ed.: It's cool that all of these have their own sauna. Do all or most houses in Finland have their own sauna? Or are there neighborhood saunas in towns for those who don't have one in the house?

too bad because those giant lamps are cool - they are by an old British company called Anglepoise, who are well known for making very high quality desk lamps. That is the novelty version of course and will run you about 6k. They will also terrify you in the middle of the night I'd imagine.

I had recommended them to a friend who wanted a pink desk lamp.

the plants and the art work really well here, only thing I'd mention is that the chair is really similar to the wall color, so it's kind of camouflaged. If you want it to really stand out, an earth tone might be good - something similar to the rug color. I also agree that you are going to need more on the wall since the color is so bright and striking. Otherwise people will have their attention constantly brought to the paint.

This was great, thank you. If you know of any finnish sites similar to https://www.oldhousedreams.com/ let me know, I like looking at old homes and don't have the time or the patience to dig through foreign listing websites.
