NikkolasKing posted:My point is, reverence for cops does not even appear to be a French Right value. Macron is pissing off everyone. French right-wingers are massive hypocrites. Paying lip-service to the police while being corrupt as hell is right-wing values. The only thing about Macron's authoritarian poo poo that makes them mad is that they didn't get to do it themselves. Kobal2 posted:But because Marcon & his crew pretend to be clean-cut, happy to negotiate democrats, and are in cahoots with a few major news owners ; it's just the usual "separatist" suspects realizing something's beyond hosed up. Pretty much. First they came for the antiracists.

Kobal2 posted:Fascists. Marine Le Pen has given it her approval IIRC. Over the past few years, much like in the US the whole "REVERE COPS NO MATTER WHAT OR DIE" sentiment has been growing in certain spheres, for similar reasons (breakdown of institutions, breach of trust with the gvt, fear of The Other, Post-Modernism (lol, but really youtube/facebook bs + old folks scared of antifa/antiracists/anticolonialism etc...). quote:Criticism also come from the opposition, with far-right leader Marine Le Pen saying that the government intends to “monitor and censor” the entire French population instead of dealing with the real threats.

Everyone I speak to says that "everyone" hates Macron, which makes sense, but opinion polls seem to have him at ~40% approval. Is it just that the bar for political leaders is subterranean?

It's also increasingly unseemly to talk of "police violence", because "society is violent" and it's hate speech against cops.pointsofdata posted:Everyone I speak to says that "everyone" hates Macron, which makes sense, but opinion polls seem to have him at ~40% approval. Is it just that the bar for political leaders is subterranean? The left really hates him for being the perfect example of everything they've warned about wrt to centrists, everyone else can occasionally criticize him to remind the electorate they exist, but they don't really have a problem with the authoritarian poo poo in itself except they don't get to do it themselves. The right's more busy pushing to reopen bars anyway. As far as the polls are concerned he still has a lot of Biden-style soft support and will probably keep it, and the combination of terrorism+covid means there's a lot of closing of ranks around the leader. Toplowtech posted:LOL he isn't socialist so he will stay far above Hollande 4% because in France old grandmas alone keep you above 20% in the poll. He is , on the other hand, far more hated in term of intensity. That's where I land. I had some quiet spite for Hollande because he was a middle-of-the-road center-right-under-a-red-rose type guy who did less than nothing to undo what Sarkozy did and had some problematic underlings. I didn't like him, I don't hate him. He's a little nothing man. If nothing else, he was the embodiment of what the Parti Socialiste had/has become and I'm lowkey glad of that because we deserve a real Left (if only one would, you know, form up...) I will on the other hand try to hang on to life as long as I can JUST for the opportunity to take a nuclear chemo dump on Macron's grave. I don't think I loathed Sarkozy that hard, even (and boy did I hate that supercilious, conniving, evil little goblin) NikkolasKing posted:https://www.politico.eu/article/france-ban-photos-police-violence-freedom-privacy-protests/ I'm 80% sure I saw her ringing endorsement of the "don't show cops' faces" article zooming past in my TL, but I'm really not interested in what she has to say and don't really care to look it up.
