Thanks for the advice the other day. Sadly Peanut has now gone to join Jimmy (it's quite sad to ask the crematorium to just copy-paste our wishes from 8 months ago  ). Maple's doing ok, as mentioned she was already distancing herself over the last week. I'm now wondering about food in the future. Maple's coming up to 9 months now, and we've been feeding her (them) the same food they had in their foster home - Royal Canin dry kitten, and a random local kitten wet food. Should I start the transition to adult food at 12 months? I'm aware I should mix it gradually to avoid an upset tummy. I'm also not sure what sort of food to get - I'm happy with the Royal Canin brand, but when she turns 1 she won't be any specific type of cat (urinary/Maine Coon/7+/overweight), and I don't see a type of food for "bog standard healthy young moggy". Any tips? Also I hope the local shelter would like a bunch of kitten food, since I did a massive order just before Peanut got ill, that would have taken them both up to 12 months

Royal Canin does have a "standard" adult cat food: https://www.royalcanin.com/us/cats/products/retail-products/indoor-adult-dry-cat-food That said just about any brand should be fine, as long as your cat likes it. And yeah, ask the shelter if they take food donations. Most will be happy to take them.

I've got a 15 year old 10lb domestic short hair and I'm trying to figure out proper feeding. Right now, he gets 2 cans of Royal Canin Aging or Digestive Help wet food a day. Should we be putting dry food down during the evening? If I'm reading the site right, even a 1/2 cup of dry food isn't meeting his calorie needs? We don't want him to get over weight or lose weight obviously so I'm just trying to figure out what he actually needs daily for lounging around and gettin zoomies on occasion.

my cat is having his pancreatic cyst drained tomorrow morning and i am mostly just scared to give him this giant 50mg pill of Gabapentin 90 mins before the car ride. can someone just reassure me that my cat isn’t going to choke to death on the pill if i gently caress up giving it to him? i’ve gotten pretty good at pilling him in the past week but only with way smaller pills!!! i love you all and all your cats

So I started back up with wet food after a few weeks with the automatic feeder. I'm feeding my guy 1/2 cup of Blue Buffalo dry food and a 3oz tin of wet food daily. Dry food is doled out in 1/8 increments from 7am-4pm and then I give em wet food around 6-7pm. I have been adding a tin of water to the wet food to try and get them more fluids. They are now jumping up from wherever they are in the apartment and following me whenever I got into the kitchen and associate the running of the sink with getting fed unfortunately. Thankfully their plaintive cries are not affecting me as much as it has in the past but it can still get pretty aggravating. Imagine I just need to accept this is how he is but open to any suggestions. I could use the compressed air tool I'm getting or use a spray bottle but my understanding is that's negative reinforcement which will only work in the moment.

We free feed dry food, but give them some canned food each evening at 9:00. They start gathering and meowing to get my attention starting about 7:00 most nights. Simply walking to the kitchen and rattling some plates will get them to come running any time of the day or night.

Found an old cat collar that we had put on our first cat a long time ago, but he didn't like it and he's an inside cat anyway so it's just been kind of around. The cats kept messing with it so we put it on one of the other ones, a four year old black kitty, and he absolutely loving loves it. I've never seen him act this happy and relaxed! he's super blinky, rubbing on us, sitting by us way more than usual and just seems all around super loving pumped about it. We took the collar off for a minute to remove the bell and he instantly seemed distressed and hid under the table until we put it back on, and he went back to acting all happy again. This seems weird to me?? Has anyone else had a cat who just loving LOVES having a collar?

We were wondering if he might change his mind about it after wearing it overnight - nope, he's even sitting right next to his brothers on the couch now, which he normally doesn't do much at all. I swear he's a changed cat. He was already happy - don't get me wrong - but this cat is loving happy as poo poo now.

My two cats act completely different. Dusty is a cuddle bug who cries if he doesn't get to lay on me. Koto however DOES NOT want to sit in my lap at all and instead must be held in a very specific way so she can perch upon the crook of my elbow. Is there any way I can train my cat not to be such a goddamn idiot using the litter tray? He poops, then tries to cover it up, but typically has really bad aim when he's trying to cover over the poop, and often he stands in the poop, gets it on his paws and then walks it around the house - this happens once every few days and I have to lure him to one place using a treat, scruff him, then try to clean him up. Previously it's also been bad enough that I've had to put him in the bath and get a tray with some water in and wash him that way - unfortunately this stresses him out greatly and makes him lose trust in us. We've tried him with a high sided litter tray and a shorter one but in both cases he usually backs his rear end right up to the edge and either gets it right up the wall of the high sided one or sometimes over the edge of the shorter one. His brother is just fine using both types of tray - has never had a mishap and has great aim when digging to cover his doings. Like, it's not a huge deal, I can get over it, but it really would be nice for him and us if he could just not be such a dumbass. My older sister has several feral-but-friendly cats at her rural farm and unloaded one of them on us. He, a 7 month old tabby, is a little skittish but can easily be caught, petted, etc, and I have yet to see him lash out. So on that end I think he's good! The problem is our current 12 year old cat Charlie, who is extremely unhappy with the development. New cat REALLY WANTS TO BE FRIENDS and runs up whenever he sees Charlie, who wants the upstart to show some respect. We've tried to keep the new cat in a separate enclosed area as much as possible, but it's going on 2 weeks now and Charlie is just not having it. I've tried to set up situations where they could have positive interactions while a few feet apart (alternately playing with same toy; getting treats), but new cat just has to RUN UP TO CHARLIE immediately and it blows up. We don't want to send the new cat back, but Charlie takes priority. Is there any way to salvage this?

Sounds like usual cat things. let them sort it out, as long as there is no blood or flying fur, Charlie will let new cat know what is unacceptable and new cat will slowly learn.

So for the past three days Max had decided to walk into the bedroom at roughly 4am and start howling at the top of her kitty lungs and no one could figure out what the gently caress because she had never, ever done this before. The bowls were full and the box was clean it was just a huge miserable mystery. Treats or food offerings were accepted but she would immediately go back to howling so it wasn't just begging. Last night I finally chased her around the house (I was going to shut her in the bathroom) and found out she had a big ol' mat on her belly floof. This cat has never matted ever, so I hadn't even thought to check. I rolled her over, cut it off with a scissors, and she immediately chilled out and went right to bed. Not a peep out of her since. I guess 4am was her belly grooming time or maybe she knew that's when she could force the humans to pay attention to her.

Hissing and swiping is communication. They need to work out their boundaries and limits on their own. As long as there's not blood being drawn, let them be. Don't break it up. They'll settle down eventually and work out a detente.
