Has your friend seen the MIT report about how the OAS claims were bullshit? It's not exactly what you're looking for, but I feel like it could be useful in getting him to realize Morales isn't the bad guy here.

If your friend believes that Biden legitimately won the US presidential elections due to late reporting of mail-in ballots that traditionally lean democrat, they can believe Morales legitimately won the Bolivian presidential elections due to late reporting of indigenous rural areas which have overwhelmingly voted for the MAS-IPSP ever since it was created.

Even the goddamn NYT shitted on the OAS report once it was safe for them to do so lmao.

What caused the huge boom of evangelical christianity in Latin America? And why are countries like Mexico, and Bolivia seemingly less afflicted than say Central America? Also are rank and file evangelicals in rural areas right leaning or is there some sort of Evangelical equivalent to Liberation theology?

US missionaries have specifically focused on Guatemala and Brazil but they're everywhere. turns out people are open to alternatives when they're desperate, the church is corrupt, and the government offers nothing. that's a reason why they haven't been as successful in Bolivia

Hundreds of Guatemalans partly burned the Congress building Saturday in a protest demanding the resignation of President Alejandro Giammattei, following the passage of a budget that has sparked outrage in the impoverished Central American nation.

The flames in the legislative building could be seen from the street in Guatemala City, and a spokesman for the Red Cross told journalists that the group had treated several people for intoxication.

Another peaceful protest, also urging Giammattei to resign, took place in front of the old government palace in the historic center of the capital, not far from Congress.

Carrying the national flag and banners that said "No more corruption," "Giammattei out" and "They messed with the wrong generation," the protesters filled the central square in Guatemala City in front of the old palace.

The widespread discontent and indignation in Guatemala against Giammattei's administration and Congress are caused by a lack of resources for battling the coronavirus pandemic, as well as the new budget.

Guatemala's Congress, dominated by conservative pro-government parties, this week approved an almost $13 billion budget, the largest in the country's history.

Most of the funds will go to infrastructure tied to big business, sparking outrage in a country where poverty is widespread and half of children under five years old are malnourished.

Analysts have also warned that a third of the budget will need to be financed by debt.

The country's Congress has also approved $3.8 billion to fight the coronavirus pandemic, but less than 15 percent of those funds have been invested.

Giammattei's vice president said Friday night he had asked the president to resign with him.

"For the good of the country, I asked him that we present our resignations together," Guillermo Castillo said in a message posted on social media.

He also reportedly told the president that "things are not right," and admitted to tensions between himself and the head of state.

Giammattei, a 64-year-old doctor, swept to power in January promising to clean up corruption and fight organized crime.

But his presidency has been dominated by controversy over his handling of the coronavirus, particularly deficiencies in the country's hospitals.

He has also publicly sparred with his vice president, who in May revealed the two had privately clashed over the best response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Yeah I just saw this story

I might be mistaken, but I think Guatemala has been the most solid right-wing bastion in Latin America, at least as far as presidential elections go. Save for one or two exceptions, pretty much every (elected) president since the overthrow of Árbenz has been former military, evangelical fundie, or do-nothing centrist.

Maybe you mean Venezuelan Thor Halverssen, who lives in Norway?

https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/rosiegray/is-this-the-face-of-a-new-global-human-rights-movement

quote:

Since the mid-2000s, Halvorssen has focused on his work with the Human Rights Foundation, which originally zeroed in on combating left-wing populist authoritarianism in Latin America and has since expanded its scope. The bulk of the activities, energy, and money, though, seems to go to the forum in Oslo, a city Halvorssen chose as his venue upon the recommendation of his uncle Olaf. It's the city of the Oslo Peace Accords, and it's where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded. The Freedom Forum started small but has grown every year, and is now what one young staffer — Halvorssen has 11 and refers to them as colleagues instead of employees — described to me as the organization's Super Bowl.
...
His father, Thor, and uncle Olaf were in their day "Venezuela's most eligible playboys," as The New York Times described them, and the elder Thor was a senior aide to President Carlos Andrés Pérez Rodriguez.
...
The elder Halvorssen was also a CIA informant, though never a paid agent. He admitted to the University of Pennsylvania's newspaper that he had worked closely with Duane Clarridge, a former top CIA official in Latin America who was indicted during the Iran-Contra affair and who now runs his own spy agency.

The younger Halvorssen rejects the idea that his father had a special relationship with the CIA.

"My father was the ambassador for drugs," he told me.

I'm actually curious about what chilean (and non-chilean but paying attention) goons think about Jiles.

My 2 cents (chilean btw): she's an outsider to the male-dominated circlejerking politician class, so she is getting poo poo thrown from everywhere, specially the :decorum: center-'left'. Like, just today, i saw 2 news 'articles', from otherwise decent sites (elmostrador and eldesconcierto) grasping at anything to put her on a bad light. She has few assistants which is apparently weird and bad?? you are actually supposed to have a bunch of people on your payroll doing your job for you so you can gently caress off and be on tv all the time i guess?? She is hard to negotiate with which i guess means she should just do whatever the hell Frente Amplio is doing? which is nothing, at all, ever (unless jumping on bandwagons counts, they are really good at doing that. 18/10 was all them obviously). Some old-school DC senators i.e. the ones that got in when all you needed to do was 'make some anti-pinochet noise, but not too much that you would be labelled a commie' refused to refer to her as a member of parliament.

The more they poo poo on her, the more i like her basically.

And yes, Trump comparions have been drawn because they are both outsiders with Twitter Presence. She is not, however, a scummy billionare with lovely worldviews so, i dunno.

like even if she's chile's answer to fidel castro it doesn't matter because if she wins the election it won't be a victory for socialism or the working class - it will be a victory for running around like an idiot

Yeah I mean I hope it works out obviously and I'll be happy to be proven wrong.

But this isn't materialist politics. This is performative. This is without substance (and again, that is not to say that she is without substance - just that whatever has propelled her to the top, is). And I hope I don't have to remind you what sort of politicians thrive in an environment sucked dry of any actual meaning.

It's not all that matters. Not even close.

Let me put it another way: if a loving Naruto run can propel her to the top, then something else just as asinine can sink her career. Even if elected, she will not be able to govern with the kind of mandate you think she will, because everyone even remotely familiar with how power actually works, will know her support is skin deep. Reactionaries will work on a way to make her look bad, and they will eventually find a way, and when they do find a way, her popular support will vanish, because it was all smoke and mirrors in the first place.
