I was hoping my current i7-6700k build would last me another year or two, but I cut enough corners putting it together that I'm being pushed towards a new build now that I'm upgrading to 1440p 144hz displays. Does everything in this build look good?

The 5800x cpu is (hopefully) shipping to me soon. I would have preferred to save money with a 5600x instead, but I gave up on that after two weeks of closely following the stock drops discord without even getting close to a 5600x.

Getting a Newegg combo for a 3070 seems reasonable enough (I've been monitoring these, but didn't want to pull the trigger prior to getting a cpu), so I think I'll manage this one.

I know the 970 evo plus drive is probably overkill, but I like the thought of having a Cadillac boot drive. I also have this part already, though I got it from Amazon so it would be an easy return.

My basic goal is to make a fairly high end machine for gaming and general use that will last me a good 5+ years. I'd like to be able to play+stream any PC port of a PS5 game at 1440p and 144hz, though honestly I'm probably fine with 60+ fps. I spend a comical amount of time at my computer and have money to spare, so I want to avoid cutting corners this time around while also staying within the realm of generally good value.

Looks good. I’m a fan of getting an oversized PSU. PCPP has your wattage at 444, so a 700W supply would keep your peak load under 65% which, in theory, increases the lifetime of the unit. Realistically, if your goal is to avoid upgrades and play with every gfx bell and whistle then you’ll want a 3080 and a 750W supply.

As far as I can tell your work doesn't scale with cores so you want the 5600x of the new AMD CPUs, but so does every other fucker on the planet atm (including me). It has the best single core performance of any chip right now and is also the cheapest of the newest lineup, hence the demand.

It does scale reasonably well with cores actually sometimes- if I’m doing something more intensive I’ll usually do some sort of parallel processing. This isn’t thaaaat common, but how would your recommendation change if that is the case?

Is the wisdom these days to wait on getting an RTX card until the next generation? Hold out for a price dip? I gotta keep the whole build under $1,000 if at all possible.
I can probably get by with my old 970 even if I don't have all the pretty lights from high-end components.

If you are keeping it under $1,000 I assume you are playing @ 1080p and expecting mostly to keep that monitor? Are you able to carry over the case, and how old/good is your power supply?

You can do a nice 1080p build for around $600 if you carry over a few parts.

I can't tell if you are starting from scratch or if you plan to migrate all of your storage, but as a heads up, I'm pretty sure the way pcpartspicker parametric filters choose storage you are pretty much guaranteed to get el cheapo QLC dramless drives. The WD SN550 is good value right now, but if you really are on a tight budget I would look at Patriot Burst drive instead of whatever the filter is spitting out.

I wouldn't if you can wait. There's a lot more to benchmarks than a single raw number, however:

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i5-10600K+%40+4.10GHz&id=3735

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+Ryzen+5+5600X&id=3859

It's a very significant upgrade, and the 10600K does not come with a CPU cooler, narrowing the price difference considerably.

In gaming... right now? The 5600x is king but the 10600K punches admirably on single threaded performance, but I would not invest for basically 50 euros after CPU cooler.

750W is fine for a 3080. Better to have the extra headroom although 650W would have likely been adequate if you aren’t doing any overclocking.

General wisdom is to go for a gold-rated PSU or better, no idea how that bronze-rated PSU stacks up

Mobo question. I have the one below one coming because it was bundled with the 5600x in a newegg deal and i just flailed at the buy button when I could, but digging into reviews the stuff the info I'm seeing isn't -- great. Various places seem pretty unsatisfied with the VRM and thermals.

I do not plan to do any overclocking in particular because as far as I've read it doesn't make much of a difference anyway. Are the issues with this board bad enough that I should get a different one? I previously had the ROG STRIX B550 as my mobo choice; given that the mobo is a component I'm probably not gonna wanna swap for a decade if I'm lucky, would I be better off returning this one and eating a small loss due to the combo to get a better board? I mainly just needed the 5600x out of it, I don't need features on this board specifically.

I don't know why I thought I'd be able to snag anything decent today.

The bots were out in force and now nothing I want is available until January or is marked up 300%.

I got a keyboard.

I've got a GTX 1060 and I think it's starting to fail. In the past couple days, I've noticed I get a black screen and my fans are going nuts. Both times I wasn't even using it at the time it happened. I'm assuming it's a GPU issue based on some cursory googling. My system is several years old so I'm not hugely surprised. I'm looking to upgrade it, but the prices for better GPUs are just insane as far as I can see. Does anyone have any suggestions?

buy used via SA mart/reddit/locally, buy a holdover card & hope to sell it for not too much of a loss, or try to do evga's step-up program.

the unethical thing to do is buy a cheap card from amazon and return it into january due to extended holiday returns.
