For those of you already using an Ergodox-style board, how long did it take for you to get used to it? Did you stick with a more or less standard QWERTY layout or do you heavily customize it, use Dvorak/Colemak, etc? If you use a non-QWERTY layout does it make it more challenging to use other people's computers with standard keyboards?
To somewhat answer my own question, it's taken about a week of using it non-stop for me to get to a point where I can type reasonably accurately without looking at the keyboard while running a more or less standard QWERTY layout. I've tweaked a few special keys and modifiers but the alphanumerics are all in their usual places.

I found myself hitting the layer 2 toggle button inadvertently so I swapped the switches out for the clickiest two from a sample set I had, Gateron Green and Blue. I still hit them occasionally so I might move 'em but for now at least I know for sure when I hit one.

I also occasionally end up hitting backspace when I want regular space, so I might move that around a bit too. Not sure.

Ask me about
Japanese elfgames!
After a lot of searching I finally found a mechanical numpad I wanted, but it was the Setta21, made by a hobbyist in Japan. I ordered the kit anyway, and spent most of today assembling it. I'm sort of glad that he's sold out of the Naked48 keyboard (which the Setta21 can connect to with a TRRS cable) because it's gorgeous.

I also build a FightPad (from Clawboards.xyz), though I've yet to actually use it for anything.

Are there any key cap or deskmat sales going on? On reddit I see people link to their deskmats and it's on some site that sells like 3 total products. Is there not a site that has a bunch of interesting ones to browse? Same for keycaps I suppose.

Other than aesthetics, what is there to gain with new keycaps? I have the set that came on my Ducky One 2 TKL and then these https://smile.amazon.com/HyperX-Pudding-Keycaps-Translucent-Mechanical/dp/B087QTWCTQ so my lights shine more. I get the impression that most key cap sets out there are not transparent even for the letters which I don't like.

And this GMMK Pro is intriguing. Seems like a pretty good price since you would just need switches which they have for $20-25 and then caps starting at $25.

Yeah there's a bunch of black Friday stuff:
Kono has $10 deskmats
DixieMech has 40% off in stock items, and they've got a bunch of deskmats.
TX keyboards is doing 10% off in stock (but it's really only lube and springs and cables and stuff.)
The Key Company is going to have IFK Cafe in stock (an Infinikey version of GMK Cafe keycap set) but it will sell out fast.

Mechs and Co has some real nice deskmats too: https://mechsandco.com/collections/deskmats

Good keycaps just feel so nice to type with. They're sturdy and don't wiggle much under your fingers, they have a texture that's generally really pleasant to the touch, and depending on the profile, they can be much more comfortable to type with. The Cherry profile sets the caps I have leagues ahead of the OEM caps I previously had.

There's also a notable sound difference when using larger profiles like SA and MT3.

Yeah, most aren't transparent, but if you can dig the aesthetic of opaque caps, the other little creature comforts more than make up for it.

GMK and IFK are different brands. They use different tooling and process, so they'll look a bit different.

IIRC the HyperX puddings use the OEM keycap profile.

Hi, I'm looking at a keyboard that was brought up here a while ago in passing but wanted to know if anyone else had any good experiences with it, the Ajazz AK510

Just wanted to know if anyone had one, how they like it so far, etc, mostly just want something nice for typing and writing, I tend to like more classic builds and designs more so this one popped out at me. It looks like they have some kind of Cherry clone called Zorros, I was thinking about getting the blues.

Blues / Browns are very different for sure, clicky vs 'tactile not really'. Or Reds/Blues very different. I dont think a lot of folks love Blues though?

Gearman

Reds (Linear) and Blues (clicky) are the opposite ends of the spectrum, with Browns (tactile) sitting right in the middle.

Most people tend to gravitate towards linears and tactiles, so I'd probably offer Reds and Browns.

Blues are sufficiently loud that if you're going to use them you might as well ball out with a Model M, and if you're going to take the trouble to put dampeners on them you might as well just get Clears.

Greens are louder/slightly stiffer than Blues but they're so niche they're getting hard to find anymore.

Drop is having a pretty good sale:

https://drop.com/buy/drop-shift-mechanical-keyboard

It's an 1800, so not quite full, but very close. It's a high quality board, with backlighting, and hot-swap sockets. With switches it'll run $230, but if you're fast you can use the code TURKEY20 to save another $20. They claim the code can only be used by 100 people, but who knows if that's actually true.

There isn't really a "best" as there's a wide range of features and prices for TKL boards. You can find some for $200 and $2,000 and everything in between.

For good entry boards, around $150-$200 I'd recommend:

Varmillo (https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=4911)

Drop CTRL (https://drop.com/buy/drop-ctrl-mechanical-keyboard) / Drop CTRL High Profile (https://drop.com/buy/drop-ctrl-high-profile-mechanical-keyboard)

GMMK TKL (https://www.pcgamingrace.com/products/gmmk-tkl-tenkeyless-brown-switch)

The DROP and GMMKs are pricier but also hot-swappable so you can always easily change your switches later. There are a bunch of other good TKLs out there, but it really depends on your budget and if you want things like LED, hot-swap, aluminum body, wireless, etc.

- Drop MT3 White on Black (really curious to try MT3 profile and wanted a set of black keycaps to go with my black Mysterium and Discipad)
- Infinikey Cafè Base and Extras (been pining over the GMK Cafe set but didn't want to pay the $400+ for an aftermarket set. The fact that they're also PBT is the cherry on top. Wish I had bought a couple!)

I'm also looking for something similar to replace my several-year-old Logitech Classic Keyboard 200. I did some window shopping last weekend and found I definitely prefer the Red Cherry MX switch. The closest thing I liked last weekend was Cosair's K68 RGB, but even then I felt the alphanumeric keys were a bit too narrow and I hated the lovely-rear end texture on the spacebar.

I basically just want a full-size Red Cherry MX keyboard with RGB lighting and not much else. What are the preferred keyboard brands/models nowadays? I'll most likely go with whatever is on the best discount.

Unfortunately, there aren't a ton of options for full-size outside of companies like Corsair, Logitech, etc.

Some that I would recommend:

- Durgod Taurus (don't think it has RGB)
- Ducky One 2
- GMMK (hot swappable switches, cheaper than most other boards, also no branding on the top)
- Drop Shift (1800 so more compact than a full size, but a high quality board and hot swappable)

Edit: Despite the dumb name, I would highly recommend the GMMK. Being able to pull out switches and lube or replace them entirely makes it MUCH better than similar boards. It's also probably the cheapest board of the bunch, despite also being aluminum, and having per-key RGB. Thankfully, there's no logo or branding on top of the board, either. It is incredibly good value while giving you room to branch out and mod or try new switches down the road.

Yeah that is really solid value. The one big downside is that it is only compatible with Oetemu switches, whereas the majority of switches available on the market are Cherry. That said, if you want something very affordable, with the ability to try a few other kinds of switches down the road, it's a great place to start.
